PhD cand - Baroque Art and Architecture (Univ of Toronto)

Evonne Levy

Seeking:
Ph.D. candidate in Baroque Art and Architecture of Spain/Portugal

The Graduate Department of Art, home to art history at the University
of Toronto, is seeking applicants to its Ph.D. program to participate
in a funded project, under the supervision of Prof. Evonne Levy,
while studying for the Ph.D.

The funding of this research is provided by a Major Collaborative Research
Initiative (MCRI) funded by the Social Sciences and Research Council of
Canada (SSHRC) on the “Hispanic Baroque: Complexity in the First Atlantic
Culture” (2007-13). http://baroque-identities.mcgill.ca/

Following successful completion of coursework and examinations for
the Ph.D. the student will receive funding for extended travel (up to
one year) in Spain and Portugal to catalogue and document
photographically the Jesuit churches and colleges of the 16th and
17th centuries. It is expected that this work will coincide with the
student’s development of a dissertation topic on an aspect of this
material. There is also some funding for equipment and completion of
the cataloging and its organization online in Toronto. The student
will also be a team member of the MCRI project, with participation in
meetings in Canada and abroad.

The ideal candidate will have an excellent academic record, and a
strong interest in both architectural history and art history of the
European Baroque. Mastery of either Spanish or Portuguese and an
ability to develop reading ability in the second language are
important. Students with a B.A. apply to the direct entry Ph.D.
program; students with an M.A. apply to the Ph.D. program.
Applicants from Canada or abroad are urged to apply. Interested
applicants are encouraged to be in touch by email before applying and
to plan a campus visit (if possible) or phone interview with
Professor Levy.

The application deadline to the Graduate Department of Art is
December 17, 2007.
