- un CV complet, incluant le cas échéant les activités scientifiques et publications ;
- une lettre de motivation d’une page ;
- une lettre de recommandation d’un professeur, envoyée directement aux deux promoteurs du projet ;

Full time PhD grant for 4 years from 1 July 2012 until 30 June 2016.

€1500 - €1800 net monthly
Prerequisite: holder of a Master’s degree (120 ECTS), of a “master-na-master”, or of a Master of Advanced Studies in one of the following fields: Classic Studies, Literature, Art History. The applicant is not only required to have an excellent knowledge of the Latin language but also to be at ease with classical and humanist literature as well as to be interested in poetics and the theory of arts of the 16th and 17th centuries; knowledge of emblematics and of humanist symbolism would be an advantage. The PhD paper can be written in English, but a passive knowledge of the French language is required.
The PhD project will be embedded in a collaborative research project (FRFC) financed by the Belgian Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique (FNRS), entitled: “Pensée figurée et expérience mystique à l’âge baroque: Etude de l’émergence d’une nouvelle culture de la représentation”. This project is aimed at refreshing the approach to the theoretical and practical grounds of representation during the 16th and 17th centuries, from the point of view of cultural history, by confronting two corpora usually studied apart from each other: emblematic literature (or humanist symbolism) and mystic literature. Being kinds of figurative expression, these two corpora open up a reflection over the multifaceted notion of “figure”. The figure, intermediate between language and image, or between the sayable and the visible, appears to be a key notion to understand the culture of the representation that flourished especially in the 17th century.
The PhD student will have to study in depth a series of major texts from the seventeenth century, whose basis and center is formed by the Bibliotheca Imaginis Figuratae (access from: http://gemca.fltr.ucl.ac.be/php/pages/bif_0.fr.php). In these nearly exclusively Latin texts, the PhD student will focus especially on excerpts referring to the notion of figura (or related concepts, such as allegoria, symbolum, pictura...) in an approach combining sharp philological analysis and the consideration of cultural information. During this four-year project, biennial meetings will be held, whose purpose will be to share and discuss the intermediate results with an interdisciplinary and international team involved in the project. In addition to this special support, the PhD student will be involved at Louvain-la-Neuve in a young and dynamic research group; numerous activities will help her or him to explore and deepen her or his understanding of the various sides of cultural analysis during the Early Modern Period (http://gemca.fltr.ucl.ac.be).
Applications should be sent to the two initiators of the project by the 15th of April 2012: agnes.guiderdoniuclouvain.be and ralph.dekoninckuclouvain.be .
The application must include:
- a complete CV, with (if applicable) scientific activities and publications ;
- a one page cover letter ;
- a letter of recommendation by an academic referee, sent straight to the two initiators of this project;
- the name and contact details of another academic referee for further information.
