Post-Doctoral Research Associateship

The Yale Center for British Art is seeking an outstanding young scholar
for a Post-Doctoral Research Associateship in the Center's Research
Department. Applicants should be recent recipients of the Ph.D. in art
history or a related field (degree granted within the last two years)
whose interests and expertise include the field of British art and visual
culture. The Ph.D. must be in hand by the time the position begins. The
post may be held for a maximum of three years.

The Research Department is responsible for developing the Center's
research culture. Its activities include the organization of scholarly
events, undergraduate and graduate teaching initiatives, programmatic
support for Center exhibitions, running the Fellowships program, and
developing intellectual projects across Yale University and with national
and international partners.

The Research Associate will report directly to the Head of Research.
Primary duties will include research and administrative tasks associated
with the conception, development, and organization of pedagogical and
scholarly programs, including symposia, seminars, and lecture series. The
RA will also undertake library and archival research on designated topics,
develop initiatives to expand the use of the collection by faculty and
students, teach undergraduate courses, act as liaison between visiting
fellows and Yale's scholarly community, and will be expected to
participate fully in the intellectual life of the YCBA and of Yale University.

The Research Associate will support the research interests of the Head of
Research, with full credit given for his/her contributions. S/he will also
have one day each week to engage in scholarship of his/her own and will be
expected to publish and to deliver papers at national and international
conferences. The R.A. will receive modest travel funds for work on behalf
of the department, and for personal research.

Presented to the university by Paul Mellon (Yale Class of 1929), the Yale
Center for British Art (YCBA) houses the largest and most comprehensive
collection of British art outside the United Kingdom. The collection of
approximately 2,000 paintings, several hundred sculptures, 50,000 prints
and drawings, and 35,000 rare books and manuscripts reflects the
development of British art, life, and thought from the Elizabethan period
onward. The Center offers a year-round schedule of exhibitions and
educational programs, including lectures, symposia, films, concerts,
tours, and other special events. The YCBA also provides numerous
opportunities for scholarly research, such as residential fellowships.
Academic resources of the Center include the Reference Library and Photo
Archive, Conservation Laboratory, and Study Room for examining prints,
drawings, rare books, and manuscripts from the collection. An affiliated
institution in London, the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art
(PMC), awards grants and fellowships, publishes academic titles, and
sponsors Yale's oldest credit-granting undergraduate study abroad program,
Yale-in-London, which is run in coordination with the YCBA.

Following the award of an AHRC Speculative Research Grant to Professor
Valerie Fraser, the Department of Art History and Theory wishes to appoint
a Research Officer (post-doctoral or equivalent) to work on a study of the
history and historiography of Modern and Contemporary Latin American art
in the UK. This appointment would suit an emerging scholar interested in
developing research spanning the fields of curatorship and contemporary
art history and theory. Working with Professor Fraser and SRF Dr Isobel
Whitelegg, the successful candidate will have particular responsibility
for investigating the presence of Latin American art in the UK over the
last ten years. This will involve carrying out archival research and
conducting interviews with selected artists, curators and academics.

Appointment to this part-time (0.8fte), one year fixed-term post, will be
made at £24,402 per annum, pro rata.
