We invite applicants for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship position at
Stanford University researching comparative urban development and its
environmental effects in the United States and Asia. With funding from the
Woods Institute for the Environment, the research project brings together
history, environmental science and policy, and modern geographical analysis to
make a comparative study of suburban-style development in Bangalore, India,
Shenzhen, China and the greater San Jose region in the U.S. The goals of the
project are fourfold: 1) define the spatial extent and distribution of urban
form and urban growth for three extended metropolitan areas; 2) understand the
drivers behind low-density suburban growth; 3) assess the environmental
implications of such growth patterns; and 4) identify the policy levers and
institutional mechanisms that can support alternative growth patterns that are
both environmentally sustainable and politically pragmatic.

The postdoctoral fellow will be a core member of a research team led by
Principal Investigator Karen C. Seto (Geological and Environmental Sciences)
and Co-P.I. Margaret O'Mara (History). The fellow will be expected to conduct
both quantitative and qualitative research using primary and secondary
historical documents, government reports and data sets, and interviews with
local stakeholders. Required skills include GIS and spatial analysis. At least
one two-week visit to field sites in Asia will be expected and sponsored by
project funds. Ph.D.'s from all relevant disciplines are welcome to apply;
those whose research experience incorporates both historical and geographical
analysis are particularly encouraged.

The appointment is for two years beginning September 1, 2006. Candidates must
have their Ph.D. degree in hand by that date, and must have received their
Ph.D. no earlier than September 2003. The fellowship carries a stipend of
$43,000 and benefits.

Please send a CV, a brief statement, and names and telephone numbers of three
references to both Professor Karen Seto (ksetostanford.edu) and Professor
Margaret O'Mara (momarastanford.edu). Applications will be accepted on a
rolling basis, and we expect to make a final hiring decision by July 15, 2006.

Stanford University welcomes applications from women and minorities and is an
affirmative action/equal opportunity employer.
