Musical Iconography (Ravenna, 7-10 June 06)

Call for Papers

Musical Iconography in the 21st Century: Mapping European Art for
Contexts and Methods

Ravenna, Dipartimento di Storie e Metodi per la Conservazione dei Beni
Culturali
7-10 June 2006

After the extremely positive results of the European research project
"Images of Music: A Cultural Heritage" which has united seven European
countries (Austria, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain)
in 2002/03 (coordinator: Tilman Seebass, Innsbruck), plans have been
drawn up to establish a specialized Study Group for Musical Iconography
in European Art within the International Musicological Society, to
promote scholarly exchange in this field of research. With this goal in
mind, the program committee composed by Nicoletta Guidobaldi
(Bologna-Ravenna), Alexandra Goulaki Voutyra (Thessaloniki) and Björn
R. Tammen (Vienna), is pleased to announce an international conference
on musical iconography, to be held at the Dipartimento di Storie e
Metodi per la Conservazione dei Beni Culturali (Università di Bologna,
Sede di Ravenna), 7-10 June 2006. At this meeting we shall formally
install the Study Group and apply for approval with the Directorium of
IMS.

Scholars are invited to submit papers on musical iconography in
European art from antiquity to modern times. Papers might deal with the
continuity and variation, the transmission and reception of
iconographical themes (through the ages, through different cultures and
through geographical spaces), musical imagery as a "mirror" of concepts
and theories about music, and iconography in context (city, court,
church, and landscape). The conference's location in Ravenna, former
capital of the Roman Empire in Late Antiquity might stimulate scholarly
exchange between East and West, as well as the discussion of topics
related to Mediterranean culture, but any other topic of European
musical iconography is welcome as well.

At this point the organizers need from the participants the
confirmation that they will participate and a preliminary title of the
paper (deadline 1.12.05). By 20.1.06 the definite proposal for a paper
(max. 20 minutes, abstract no longer than 300 words) should be sent by
e-mail, in duplicate, to <nicoletta.guidobaldiunibo.it>, and to
<bjoern.tammentelering.at>. Please send your abstract in the body of
the message, without attachment.

The program and further organizational matters will be announced by the
end of February 2006 by personal letter and via website
http://www.dismec.unibo.it.
