Visions of a Future: Art and Art History in Changing Contexts

The Swiss Institute for Art Research in Zurich and Lausanne is organizing an
international symposium jointly with the Zurich Kunsthalle on the "Visions
of a Future: Art and Art History in Changing Contexts". The event will be
held in Zurich from 16th to 19th June 2002.

The multilingual symposium will be under the patronage of the International
Association of Research Institutes in the History of Art (RIHA), to which
eighteen leading art history research institutes in Europe and the USA
belong. The conference languages will be English, French and German.

The symposium aims to examine future prospects of Art and Art History at a
time of radical change. It will seek to promote a dialogue between artists
and art historians as well as raise (self-)critical questions. The main
focus will not be to ponder cultural pessimism or self-reflective
discourses, but rather to examine ideas and concepts to be explored in the
coming years. The conference will look into developments which started long
ago but have not yet been completed, and will consider where they are
leading us – and how we can or we should respond to them. What strategies
are being developped in art, art communication, the art scene, the art
market and the history of art in response to constantly changing contexts?

The conference invites artists, art researchers, university professors,
representatives of museums and art galleries, art communicators, art
connoisseurs, and insiders from the art market to present their views. An
"inside view" will be constantly informed by an "outside reality".

Apart from the introduction and summing up, five thematic categories are
envisaged:

I) Globalization – new networks – theorization
II) The art scene, art market and art galleries and museums
III) Art history as a discipline and its institutions
IV) The relationship between contemporary art and art history
V) Fields of activity of artists and art historians.

With the symposium the organizers intend to emphasize a discussion
particularly among the young but also between younger people and scholars.
Papers presented should be limited to 20 minutes.

The invitation to Zurich includes a remuneration of SFr. 500.- for each
presentation, the travel expences (economy-class airline ticket or second
class train ticket) and four nights in a hotel in the city.

Applications should include a half-page summary of the proposed paper along
with a brief curriculum vitae of 10 to 15 lines and should be sent by 31th
January, 2002 to:

Association of Research Institutes in the History of Art" (RIHA) qui

I) Mondialisation – nouveaux reseaux – formation theorique
