Grants for courses in Curating and Writing at the Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts

Curatorial theory and practice will be taught this summer by renowned curators: Marina Fokidis and Nicolaus Schafhausen. Art critic Kimberly Bradley will instruct participants on writing about art.

The Summer Academy awards many grants for participation in one of the 18 courses. The deadline for application is 3 April 2019.

Images into words: writing about contemporary art
22–31 July 2019
Whether snappy press releases, theoretical catalogue essays or articles for an art blog, writing about contemporary art is never easy, no matter what its purpose. An American living in Berlin, Kimberly Bradley will teach various methods to aid all kinds of art-writers to find not only their individual voices, but also focus and flow.
Bradley herself has long bridged the worlds of mainstream culture journalism (The New York Times, Monocle and others) and art criticism in publications ranging from populist to theoretical (Frieze, art-agenda, Monopol, etc.).

"It’s all about the exhibition, isn’t it?" Curatorial practice and its entanglements
22 July–3 August 2019
This course will explore the ever-changing nature of contemporary art exhibitions, exploring the curatorial methods and challenges involved in the rapid socio-economic, political, ecological and technological transformation of our times. Participants will reflect on projects such as the bi-locational documenta 14 and other scenarios which do not necessarily occupy the epicentre.
Marina Fokidis was head of the Artistic Office in Athens and curatorial adviser for documenta 14. She is the founder of Kunsthalle Athena and the culture magazine South as a State of Mind.

NICOLAUS SCHAFHAUSEN
Curating contemporary art against the background of a local context
19–31 August 2019
How do we curate exhibitions of contemporary art in places with a culture of remembrance? The focus is on the impact of art beyond the classic White Cube of museums and exhibition centres. Taking the example of a special exhibition in the Munich Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism, the class will explore questions of how far the specific local historical and current context plays a role in curating contemporary art, and how far it can be productively incorporated.
This autumn, Nicolaus Schafhausen, parting director of the Vienna Kunsthalle, is to realise an interdisciplinary project at the Munich Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism.

Bilder in Worten: Schreiben über Kunst
22.–31. Juli 2019
Ob flotte Pressemitteilungen, theoretische Katalogessays oder Artikel für einen Kunst-Blog, über zeitgenössische Kunst zu schreiben ist niemals leicht, egal welche Absicht man verfolgt. Der Kurs der in Berlin lebenden Amerikanerin Kimberly Bradley vermittelt eine Reihe von Methoden, die KunstschreiberInnen jeder Art nicht nur dabei helfen sollen, eine eigene Stimme zu finden, sondern auch sich zu fokussieren und in den Schreibfluss zu kommen.
Bradley selbst bewegt sich seit langem zwischen Mainstream-Kulturjournalismus (The New York Times, Monocle, usw.) und Kunstkritik in populistisch bis theoretisch orientierten Kunstpublikationen (Frieze, art-agenda, Monopol, usw.).

„It’s all about the exhibition, isn’t it?“ Kuratorische Praxis und ihre Verflechtungen
22. Juli–3. August 2019
In diesem Kurs wird der sich ständig wandelnde Charakter zeitgenössischer Kunstausstellungen erkundet. Die Teilnehmenden werden sich unter Bezugnahme des raschen sozioökonomischen, politischen, ökologischen und technologischen Wandels unserer Zeit, mit den kuratorischen Methoden und Herausforderungen auseinandersetzen. Projekte, wie die an zwei Orten ausgerichtete documenta 14 und andere nicht unbedingt in Epizentren angesiedelte Szenarien werden dabei betrachtet.
Marina Fokidis war unter anderem Leiterin des Künstlerischen Büros Athen und kuratorische Beraterin der documenta 14 und ist Gründerin der Kunsthalle Athena und der Zeitschrift South as a State of Mind.

NICOLAUS SCHAFHAUSEN
Kuratieren zeitgenössischer Kunst vor dem Hintergrund lokaler Zusammenhänge
19.–31. August 2019
Wie kuratiert man Ausstellungen zeitgenössischer Kunst an Orten der Erinnerungskultur? Zentral wird die Frage nach der Wirkungsmacht von Kunst außerhalb des klassischen White Cube von Museen und Ausstellungshäusern behandelt. Am Fallbeispiel einer Sonderausstellung im NS-Dokumentationszentrum München wird erörtert, inwieweit der spezifische lokale historische oder auch gegenwärtige Kontext eine Rolle für das Kuratieren zeitgenössischer Kunst spielt, und inwiefern er produktiv eingebunden werden kann.
Nicolaus Schafhausen ist scheidender Direktor der Kunsthalle Wien, der im Herbst ein interdisziplinäres Projekt am NS-Dokumentationszentrum München verwirklichen wird.
