Le Nord. Un mythe artistique, littéraire et musical
The North, a Literary, Musical and Artistic Myth

In connection with the exhibition on the Finnish artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela presented at Musée d’Orsay during the spring of 2012, the association The Birch and the Star - Finnish perspectives on the long nineteenth century is organising jointly with Musée d’Orsay and Institut Finlandais an international symposium on “The North, a Literary, Musical and Artistic Myth.” It intends to explore the representation of the North in fin-de-siècle literature, music and arts, with a focus on the mythical images of the North created by Naturalist and Symbolist artists as an arctic space for isolation, melancholy and silence; the kind of symbols and myths used in the narration of the North, and how these images were understood and interpreted in different cultural contexts. By emphasising a comparative study on the images of the North, the symposium encourages discussion on the possible diverse “Norths”.

We invite submissions for twenty-minute original papers on the following aspects:
• Nordic Landscapes: representations and symbols of the northern flora and fauna, the wilderness, landscapes and seasonal rhythm.
• Nordic Emotions: representations of melancholia and nostalgia in Naturalist and Symbolist literature, music and arts.
• Nordic Primitivism: representations of the archaic and the mythic, meeting of “civilised” and “primitive” cultures.

En l'honneur de l'exposition consacrée par le musée d'Orsay à l'artiste finlandais Akseli Gallen-Kallela, l’association The Birch and the Star. Finnish Perspectives on the long nineteenth-century organise en collaboration avec le Musée d’Orsay et l’Institut finlandais un colloque international portant sur "Le Nord. Un mythe artistique, musical et littéraire".
Les représentations du nord dans l'art, la musique et la littérature au tournant du XIXe siècle seront au centre de cette rencontre. Les intervenants se proposeront d’étudier la façon dont les artistes, auteurs et compositeurs naturalistes et symbolistes ont créé une image mythique du nord comme espace arctique de solitude, de silence et de mélancolie ; les symboles et mythes employés dans la narration du nord ; et comment ces images furent reçues et interprétées dans différents contextes culturels. En accentuant l'étude comparative des images véhiculées par le nord, le colloque s'interrogera sur une possible multiplicité de "nords".
Les intervenants du colloque sont invités à présenter des communications d’une durée de 20 minutes sur les thèmes suivants :
- le paysage nordique : représentations et symboles de la faune et de la flore nordiques, des paysages sauvages et du rythme des saisons.
- les émotions nordiques : représentation de la mélancolie et de la nostalgie dans l'art, la musique et la littérature naturaliste et symboliste.
- la primitivité nordique : représentation de l'archaïsme et du mythe, rencontre de la civilisation et des cultures primitives.
