THE LEGACY OF BRUNO ZEVI FOR THE XXI CENTURY
Bruno Zevi died exactly in 2000, at the threshold of the XXI century. In 2018, will be celebrated the Centenary of the birth of the great architectural historian, a sharp observer and a sophisticated scholar of the complex dynamics of XX century architecture, but not just this. By his reading of architecture based on a different way of interpreting history, whose method of investigation is grounded in the concept of counter-history, Zevi gives new interpretative nourishment to the work of architects such as Michelangelo, Borromini, Frank Lloyd Wright, Erich Mendelsohn and many others. These are the terms within which investigating to affirm that Militant Criticism that connotes the entire work of the architect. In 1973 Zevi identifies seven invariants to explain the modern language of architecture under new light, according to an enlightening interpretation that defies the certainties of historicist interpretation, vigorously giving a highly revolutionary and revealing interpretation of modernist space. Meanwhile, in his lecturing activity Zevi introduces an innovative and dynamic system of teaching history of architecture, which considers exactly history as methodology of architectural doing that is history as a fundamental discipline of analysis, comprehension and inspiration for future design.
This issue of "Esempi di Architettura" aims to focus the attention on the legacy of Bruno Zevi's message, responding to specific questions such as: have we learned how to look at architecture with the Zevian lens and to which extent does it influence contemporary architecture? The Zevian teaching methodology in history of architecture is still current, and to what extent has it taken root in the national and international architecture schools? Has contemporary design learned to be oriented toward a holistic approach to project, as in the case of Urba-tecture? Can we still talk about anti-historical reading, of renewing history of architecture, of design methodology through history? Is the concept of Zero Degree of architecture, borrowed from Roland Barthes, still current? This issue therefore aims to deepen the legacy left by Zevi for the XXI century, investigating how his revolutionary method is, or may be, widespread and developed both in the historiographical and design domains.

L’EREDITÁ DI BRUNO ZEVI PER IL XXI SECOLO
Bruno Zevi muore esattamente nel 2000, sulla soglia del XXI secolo. Nel 2018 si celebra il Centenario della nascita del grande storico dell’architettura, acuto osservatore e raffinato studioso delle complesse dinamiche dell’architettura del XX secolo, ma non solo. Con la sua letturadell’architettura basata su un modo diverso di interpretare la storia, il cui metodo d’indagine si struttura sul concetto di contro-storia, Zevi dá nuova linfa interpretativa all’opera di architetti quali Michelangelo, Borromini, Frank Lloyd Wright, Erich Mendelsohn e moltissimi altri. Egli introduce nuove categorie per un’analisi completa di ciό che definisce Urba-tettura, un felice neologismo che contempla anche la storia dell’edilizia minore, la storia dell’urbanistica, la storia del paesaggio e la storia dell’architettura delle antiche culture orientali ed extra-europee in genere, per un’ esegesi integrata della storia dell’architettura. Sono questi i termini entro cui investigare per affermare quel Criticismo Militante che connota l’intera opera dell’architetto. Nel 1973 Zevi individua sette invarianti per spiegare il linguaggio moderno dell’architettura sotto nuova luce, in base ad una interpretazione illuminante che scardina le certezze dell’interpretazione storicista, dando vigore ad una interpretazione fortemente rivoluzionaria e illuminante dello spazio modernista. Nel frattempo, nella sua attivitá di docenza Zevi introduce un sistema di insegnamento della storia dell’architettura innovativo e dinamico, che considera appunta la storia come metodologia del fare architettonico, ossia la storia come fondamentale disciplina di analisi, comprensione e ispirazione per la progettazione futura.
Questo numero di “Esempi di Architettura” intende focalizzare l’attenzione sull’ereditá del messaggio di Bruno Zevi e, rispondendo a specifiche domande quali: abbiamo imparato a saper vedere l’architettura con la lente zeviana e quanto questa influenza l’architettura contemporanea? Le sette invarianti sono ancora uno strumento efficace per definire e identificare l’architettura contemporanea? La metodologia d’insegnamento zeviano della storia dell’architettura é ancora attuale, e fino a che punto ha attecchito nelle scuole di architettura, nazionali e internazionali? La progettazione contemporanea ha imparato ad orientarsi su un approccio olistico della progettazione, come nel caso dell’Urba-tettura? Possiamo ancora parlare di lettura anti-storica, di attualizzazione della storia dell’architettura, di metodologia progettuale attraverso la storia? É ancora attuale il concetto di Grado Zero dell’architettura, mutuato da Roland Barthes? Questo volume intende dunque approfondire l’ereditá lasciata da Zevi per il XXI secolo, indagando come il suo metodo del tutto rivoluzionario sia, o possa essere, diffuso e sviluppato sia nel campo storiografico che in quello progettuale.
