Full Professorship in Art History before 1800 (1.0 fte)

The Faculty of Humanities, LUCAS, invites applications for a fulltime full professorship in Art History before 1800. The appointment date is September 1, 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Key responsibilities
The new professor in Art History before 1800 will hold an appointment at LUCAS. The main tasks are:

• Innovative research in Art History before 1800 and regular dissemination of the results through appropriate channels;
• Teaching, especially in the program of Art History, including the new BA track Arts, Media and Society, as well as the Research MA program Arts & Culture, and contributing to curriculum development;
• Further enhancing the position of the Art History programs as nationally and internationally leading;
• Supervision of PhD research;
• Initiation and supervision of postgraduate research;
• Acquisition of project funding at the national, European and international level (NWO, Horizon 2020 etc.);
• Further build on fruitful connections between the museums in the region and the institute LUCAS/the Art History programs;
• Administrative and management duties;
• Participating and activating the (inter)national public debate on cultural issues.

Selection Criteria
We are particularly interested in scholars whose profile shows affinity with the societal role of European art in the broader perspective of art and culture in other parts of the world, as well as a specific interest in the praxis of museums and art institutions.
We are looking for:
• An internationally renowned and ambitious scholar in the field of Art History before 1800, on the basis of an extensive list of high standard publications and the proven capacity to acquire external funding for research projects.
Our successful candidate has:
• A PhD-degree in a relevant field;
• A research profile in line with the LUCAS programme Medieval and early modern studies: literature, art and learning (750-1700) (https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/research/research-projects/humanities/medieval-and-early-modern-studies-literature-art-and-learning-750-1700);
• A demonstrable commitment to high-quality teaching, and to a broad teaching scope and thesis supervision at undergraduate and graduate levels;
• A potential to develop interdisciplinary research and teaching;
• Demonstrable administrative, management, and leadership skills;
• An extensive worldwide academic network;
• An excellent command of English; most MA programs at Leiden University are taught in English, the BA track Arts Media and Society is also taught in English.
• If the successful applicant is not Dutch-speaking, s/he is expected to acquire a good command of Dutch within two years from taking up duty, for administrative and social purposes; the University will fund her/his Dutch training at the University’s Academic Language Center.
• After appointment, depending on experience and formal qualifications to date, the successful applicant will be required to enter a nationally standardized tertiary teaching skills certification trajectory (BKO or Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs), successful completion of which is a condition for favorable assessment in work reviews.
