Translation Phenomena: Texts as Artistic Intermediaries

In the early modern period, the production of art was governed to a large extent by the ubiquitous core cultural skill of translation. The translation and rediscovery of texts from antiquity ignited the humanist enthusiasm for emulation and inspired a wide variety of adaptations of theoretical concepts, exemplary works and motifs. However, this workshop will not be concentrating on the relatively well-researched reception of antiquity, but will instead focus on the successive waves of translation that have to date received but little attention. Two factors relating to transnational cultural transfer need to be primarily considered in this context. Hence, we shall be looking at the dynamics of early modern translations within Europe (the translation of artistic and architectural treatises, for example, from Italian to German and French, from Dutch to English, etc., the annotation of these and the reinterpretation of plurivalent passages). Secondly, we will analyse the artistic transformation of the ideals and norms codified in such treatises both within and outside Europe.

This junior researchers’ workshop is intended to address the concepts and practices of translation and examine how these relate to the arts and architecture of the period ca. 1550 to 1800. Welcome are presentations with a duration of some 20 to 30 minutes that deal with the following aspects:
- The relationship between translation and commentaries
- The role of illustrations in the process of translation
- The adaptation and transformation of the ideals and norms exemplified in artistic treatises
- The reception of early modern artistic treatises outside Europe

The Institute of Art History at FAU will assume the costs of travel and accommodation on behalf of participants on the basis of the rates quoted by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Übersetzungsphänome: Texte als künstlerische Vermittlungsinstanzen

In der Epoche der Frühen Neuzeit war Kunstproduktion in hohem Maße konditioniert durch die zentrale und ubiquitäre Kulturtechnik des Übersetzens. Die Übersetzung und Relektüre antiker Texte befeuerte das humanistische imitatio-Denken und inspirierte vielfältige Adaptionen theoretischer Konzepte, vorbildhafter Werke und motivischer Konstellationen. Der Workshop wird sich jedoch nicht auf die verhältnismäßig gut erforschte Antikenrezeption konzentrieren, sondern die konsekutiven Übersetzungswellen in den Blick nehmen, die bislang wenig Aufmerksamkeit gefunden haben. Vorrangig sind dabei zwei Prozesse zu untersuchen, die transnationale kulturelle Transfers betreffen: Zum einen geht es um die frühneuzeitlichen innereuropäischen Übersetzungsdynamiken (die Übertragung von Kunst- und Architekturtraktaten z. B. aus dem Italienischen ins Deutsche und Französische, aus dem Niederländischen ins Englische usw., und die dabei vorgenommene Kommentierung bzw. Neu-Interpretation plurivalenter Passagen), zum anderen gilt es, die künstlerische Transformation der in solchen Traktaten kodifizierten Vorbilder und Normen sowohl innerhalb als auch außerhalb Europas zu analysieren.

Der geplante Nachwuchs-Workshop thematisiert Konzepte und Praktiken des Übersetzens in ihrer Relation zu Bildender Kunst und Architektur im Zeitraum ca. 1550-1800. Erwünscht sind Vorträge von ca. 20-30 Minuten Dauer, die z. B. folgende Aspekte des Themas behandeln können:
- Interdependenz von Übersetzung und Kommentar
- Funktion von Illustrationen im Prozess der Übersetzung
- Adaption und Transformation der in Kunsttraktaten exemplifizierten Vorbilder und Normen
- Außereuropäische Rezeption frühneuzeitlicher Kunsttraktate.

Das Institut für Kunstgeschichte der FAU übernimmt die Kosten für die Unterkunft sowie An- und Abreise der Teilnehmer/innen nach DAAD-Sätzen. Bei Bedarf kann eine Kinderbetreuung gestellt werden.
