Conference: The Idea of the Global Museum

Offering alternative narratives to a limited yet mainstream canon of art has become one of the primary tasks of museum practice. The conference takes this status quo as a starting point for discussing museum programs, particularly those of museums of modern and contemporary art, which are thinking research, collection, exhibition, and public from a global perspective. In current discourse, such endeavors take notions of inclusivity and diversity as well as universalism and imperialism as animating principles. They all enter into "The Idea of the Global Museum," a title that serves as shorthand for a debate on the different approaches that museums are taking today, and that could be taken in the future.

Over two days, conference participants offer specific knowledges and points of view: What are the effects of a "global" approach on museum work past, present, and future? What are its necessities, possibilities, and challenges? Is there a common denominator for "global" museum practice?

This conference is part of a project that explores the collection of the Nationalgalerie with respect to its international and transregional entanglements. The project will result in a large-scale exhibition project that will take place at Hamburger Bahnhof from November 2017 to April 2018. On the initiative of the German Federal Cultural Foundation, the project is funded as part of its program "Global Museum."

Angesichts eines eingeschränkten, noch immer vorherrschenden Kanons von Kunst gehört die Entwicklung alternativer Erzählungen zu den Hauptaufgaben des Museums. Die Konferenz nimmt diesen status quo als Ausgangspunkt einer Diskussion von Museumsprogrammen - besonders von Museen moderner und zeitgenössischer Kunst -, die Sammlung, Forschung, Ausstellung und Publikum aus einer globalen Perspektive neu denken. Solche Unterfangen sind im aktuellen Diskurs mit Schlagwörtern wie Inklusion und Diversität, aber auch Universalismus und Imperialismus verbunden. Diese unterschiedlichen Wertungen fließen in "Die Idee des globalen Museums" ein: Ein Titel, der als Kürzel steht für die Diskussion verschiedener Ansätze, die Museen heute verfolgen und in Zukunft verfolgen könnten.

Über zwei Tage hinweg bringen die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer der Konferenz ihr spezifisches Wissen und ihre Standpunkte ein: Welche Auswirkungen hat eine "globale" Herangehensweise auf vergangene, aktuelle und zukünftige Museumsarbeit? Was sind ihre Notwendigkeiten, Möglichkeiten und Herausforderungen? Gibt es einen gemeinsamen Nenner für "globale" Museumspraxis?

Die Konferenz ist Teil eines Projekts, das die Sammlung der Nationalgalerie auf ihre internationalen und transregionalen Verflechtungen hin untersucht. Das Projekt endet mit einer großformatigen Ausstellung, die von November 2017 bis April 2018 im Hamburger Bahnhof stattfindet. Auf Initiative der Kulturstiftung des Bundes wird das Projekt gefördert im Rahmen des Programms "Museum Global".

Die Konferenzsprache ist Englisch. Eine Simultanübersetzung ins Deutsche ist vorhanden.
