Gillray after Gillray.

English version see below

English Version

Gillray after Gillray: echoes and influences of Rude Britannia, then and now

The year 2015 witnessed a number of exhibitions and conferences to mark the bicentenary of James Gillray’s death and the legacy of this artist’s graphic work. But «Gillray after Gillray» is a study day aimed at exploring Gillray’s posterity and visual heritage across several areas of British and European visual culture. Looking at graphic afterlives and the way Gillray’s caricatures and his vitriolic sense of satire resonate with us is an opportunity to extend current critical views from editorial cartooning and contemporary art onto a whole range of satirical forms in mass media. Issues raised will range from
art-historical approaches to case studies of post Georgian era reception, with a specific focus on the term «rude», a concept that is traditionally associated with Rude Britannia and a particular type of British sense of humour (Tate Britain, 2010) but which will, on this occasion, be discussed from a variety of angles as this conference allows us to gather scholars, curators, and artists from Britain and the rest of the world.
