museum global? Multiple Perspectives on Art, 1904–1950

Since the late 1990s, there has been a growing interest in the notion of Western Modernism reviewed from a global perspective, questioning a term, which is traditionally attributed to the art movements developed in Paris, Vienna and later New York in the twentieth century. Within the framework of the project »museum global« the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, a museum with a strong focus on art of this period and type, takes a critical look at the construct of Western Modernism and challenges established narratives. The project is scheduled to run for three years (2015 – 2017) and is supported by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes. A first highlight of the project »museum global« is the international conference (January 20 to 22, 2016), which deals with the determining role of nation states, colonization and new communication technologies in the formation of cultural concepts and art historiography.

The conference »museum global? Multiple Perspectives on Art« brings together contributions discussing questions about the emergence of artistic practices in exchange and/or in confrontation with Western Modernism in places outside Europe or North America. The studies focus on transfer processes between cultural entities and on changing forms of art production - investigating the repercussions of and reciprocal cultural entanglements in the construction of Western Modernism and at the same time highlighting the art worlds of countries outside Europe and North America. Mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion, which led to the Western art canon and in turn caused artistic reactions, become visible. The conference aims to challenge the different concepts of modernism established by regions and cultures and discusses them in a global context with the possible result that the widespread notion of Western Modernism as an allegedly genuine European theme can be deconstructed.

The project »museum global« is envisaged as a collaborative enterprise between the Cluster of Excellence »Asia and Europe in a Global Context« of Heidelberg University and will lead to an exhibition in 2017, which aims to present the artworks of the collection of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, in a global context.

museum global? Multiple Perspektiven auf die Kunst, 1904–1950

Seit den späten 1990er Jahren wächst das Interesse an einer globalgeschichtlichen Perspektive auf die Moderne, die traditionell jene Kunstrichtungen meint, die sich im 20. Jahrhundert in Paris, Wien und später New York entwickelten. Als Museum für ebenjene moderne Kunst hat die Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen mit dem auf drei Jahre (2015?2017) angelegten und von der Kulturstiftung des Bundes geförderten Projekt »museum global« eine kritische Analyse und Befragung begonnen, die den Blick auf andere mögliche Erzählungen der Moderne lenkt. Einen wichtigen Zwischenschritt im Prozess »museum global« stellt die internationale Konferenz vom 20. - 22. Januar 2016 dar, die in Auseinandersetzung mit der westlichen Moderne die konstituierende Rolle der Bildung von Nationalstaaten, der Kolonialisierung sowie neuer Kommunikationstechnologien für die Herausbildung des Kulturbegriffs und der Kunstgeschichtsschreibung thematisiert.

Die Konferenz »museum global? Multiple Perspektiven auf die Kunst 1905-1950« vereint ausgewählte Beiträge, die sich den drängenden Fragen nach der Entstehung künstlerischer Praktiken außerhalb Europas und Nord-Amerikas im Austausch und/oder in Konfrontation mit der westlichen Moderne widmen. Hierbei konzentrieren sich die Untersuchungen auf Transferprozesse zwischen den verschiedenen kulturellen Entitäten und auf sich ändernde Produktionsformen, auf die Wechsel- und Rückwirkungen von Verflechtungsprozessen auf die Konstruktion der westlichen Moderne einerseits und auf die Kunstwelten der außereuropäischen Länder andererseits. Sichtbar werden Inklusions- und Exklusions-Mechanismen, die den westlichen Kunstkanon prägten und ihrerseits künstlerische Reaktionen hervorriefen. Zudem sollen die regional unterschiedlichen Konzepte und Begriffe der Moderne hinterfragt und in einen übergeordneten Kontext gestellt werden, sodass die klassische Moderne als ein rein westliches Genuin dekonstruiert werden kann.

Das Projekt »museum global« sieht eine Kooperation mit dem Exzellenzcluster »Asia and Europe in a Global Context« (Universität Heidelberg) vor und mündet im Herbst 2017 in einer Ausstellung, die Werke der Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in einem globalen Zusammenhang verortet.
