The monthly on-line journal La Rivista di Engramma. The Classical Tradition in Western Memory (www.engramma.it) is preparing a special issue (summer 2015) on Aby Warburg and theater.

The theater is a recurrent innervating thread in the studies of Warburg, stimulating his early research on the Birth of Venus and Primavera by Sandro Botticelli (1893), and extending its branching presence as a theme in the Atlas Mnemosyne (1924 - 1929). The topic of our call is therefore articulated in two parts:

first, the dynamics of expressive gesture that led Warburg to coin the now well-known term Pathosformel (pathos formula), and reciprocal influences between theatrical practice and the figurative arts in theater and art history;
second, the elaboration of methods of construction at work in the Atlas Mnemosyne; these have found relevant terrain in contemporary art for their application and exercise, particularly in the conception phases of performance work and experimental theater.

We invite scholars and artists to address these issues by proposing contributions that concern both lines of research: first, the study of gestural forms of expression in the history of the theater and the visual arts; second, examples of theatre and performance practice that apply variations on compositional methods also observable in Warburg's Atlas Mnemosyne.

www.engramma.it - Aby Warburg e il teatro

La Rivista di Engramma (www.engramma.it) progetta di pubblicare (estate 2015) un numero monografico sul tema del rapporto tra gli studi di e su Aby Warburg e il teatro.

A partire dalla consapevolezza che il teatro è uno dei fili rossi che innerva gli studi di Warburg, dalle prime ricerche sulla Nascita di Venere e Primavera di Botticelli (1893) alla diffusa presenza del tema – attestabile anche dagli appunti – nell’Atlante Mnemosyne (1924 – 1929) – l’argomento della call si declina su due fronti di ricerca: lo studio dell’espressività del gesto – che ha portato lo studioso amburghese a coniare il temine Pathosformel – nelle reciproche influenze tra pratiche teatrali e arti figurative osservabili nel corso della storia dell’arte e del teatro e il metodo di costruzione dell’Atlante Mnemosyne che ha trovato nell’arte contemporanea, e nello specifico nella ideazione della performance/spettacolo teatrale, un rilevante terreno di applicazione ed esercizio.

Invitiamo pertanto studiosi e artisti a confrontarsi con questo tema nel proporre contributi riferibili a entrambi i percorsi di ricerca: dallo studio delle forme dell’espressione gestuale nella storia del teatro e delle arti figurative a particolari declinazioni di applicazione del metodo di costruzione dell’Atlante nella fattiva creazione teatrale.
