The Association of Historians of American Art is pleased to announce the publication of the inaugural issue of Panorama, a peer-reviewed online journal of American art and visual culture from the colonial period to the present day.
The issue can be accessed at: journalpanorama.org
Panorama is published twice a year. The journal welcomes submissions that utilize the insights of traditional and new approaches to American art and visual culture, and which proceed from a range of disciplinary (and interdisciplinary) perspectives.
The inaugural Winter 2015 issue includes three feature articles:
1. Louise Siddons, "The Language of Line: Chinese Writing, German Speech, and the Visual Poetics of John Winkler’s San Francisco Chinatown Etchings, 1916-1921"
2. Noelle Belanger and M. Elzabeth Boone, "“Art” Smith, Flying at Night, and the 1915 San Francisco World's Fair"
3. Maura Lyons, "Wounded Landscapes: Picturing Relationships between Humans and Nature in Northern Imagery from the American Civil War"
You’ll also find a Bully Pulpit roundtable that explores how American art historians have reconceived their discipline in moments of crisis. The roundtable begins with a lead essay by Lauren Kroiz on the art historian Lester Longman’s arguments for disciplinary reform during the interwar period, and includes short responses by Martin Berger, Erika Doss, JoAnne Mancini, Jennifer Jane Marshall, Alexander Nemerov, and Frances Pohl.
And the issue concludes with reviews of six recent books on American art and visual culture:
1. Judith A. Barter, Annelise K. Madsen, Sarah Kelly Oehler, and Ellen E. Roberts, Art and Appetite: American Painting, Culture, and Cuisine (Art Institute of Chicago 2013), reviewed by Shana Klein
2. Teresa A. Carbone and Kellie Jones, Witness: Art and Civil Rights in the Sixties (Brooklyn Museum 2014), reviewed by Erin Gray
3. John Ott, Manufacturing the Modern Patron in Victorian California: Cultural Philanthropy, Industrial Capital, and Social Authority (Ashgate 2014), reviewed by Emily Handlin
4. Jennifer Wingate, Sculpting Doughboys: Memory, Gender, and Taste in America’s World War I Memorials (Ashgate 2013), reviewed by Jenny Carson
5. Sarah Kelly Oehler, They Seek a City: Chicago and the Art of Migration, 1910–1950 (Yale 2013) reviewed by Amy Galpin
6. Jennifer Roberts, Transporting Visions: The Movement of Images in Early America (California 2014), reviewed by Austin Porter
