Salary Grade 8/9: £36,715 - £49,342 p.a. Full time; Fixed Term for 5 years
The Ashmolean’s collections of art from the Islamic world comprise several thousand objects in various media and are especially strong in ceramics from Iran, Syria, Egypt, Turkey and other regions of the Islamic Middle East. The Curator will be responsible for the care of the Museum’s Islamic collections, under the direction of the Keeper of the Department of Eastern Art and will work together with all members of the Eastern Art staff to ensure the security and good order of the entire collection.
The successful candidate will hold a postgraduate degree in Islamic art history, together with a wide knowledge of this subject area and will have significant previous experience of working in museums
Relevant language skills, developed IT skills and the ability to communicate effectively are essential requirements for this role as is the ability to work with and develop online collections whilst planning and delivering projects to budget and schedule.

Interviews are likely to be held in the week commencing 14th March 2011. As there are several staff members involved in the selection process it will not be possible to alter the interview date.
NB: Whilst this is primarily a curatorial position, this post will also involve involvement in two online initiatives (see below), so requires someone with an awareness of the possibilities offered by online collections.
