ARS, Vol. 59, 2026, No. 1: Mary of Hungary (1505–1558)

Veronika Kucharská

The latest issue of the journal ARS (Art Research Centre of the Slovak Academy of Sciences) edited by Ingrid Ciulisová, is dedicated to Mary of Habsburg, sister of Emperor Charles V, Queen of Hungary and Bohemia, and later Governor of the Low Countries, better known as Mary of Hungary (1505 - 1558). The issue stems from a research project that primarily focused on Mary´s collecting activities, while also exploring her diverse interests, including contemporary intellectual and spiritual matters, art, diplomacy, and military affairs. Mary´s life story transcends our national borders and links several present-day European countries. Consequently, the issue is truly international, featuring contributions by authors from Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Great Britain and the United States, and spotlighting Mary of Hungary´s connections with present-day Slovakia, Bratislava and the mining towns she once owned and managed as Queen of Hungary.
