A permanent position as Associate Professor (SKO 1011) in Art History and Visual Studies is available at the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas, University of Oslo.
We invite applications from candidates in art history and visual studies with a primary focus on Nordic art and visual culture from approximately 1700 to the present. Particular emphasis will be placed on innovative theoretical and methodological competence, as well as the ability to relate one’s research to ongoing research and teaching within the department's art history group.
The position is evenly divided between research and teaching. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research at a high international level, contribute to the development of existing research initiatives, and initiate and lead new research projects.
The position includes teaching at Bachelor’s and Master’s level within the relevant field, with particular responsibility for the supervision of Master’s and PhD students in Nordic art, broadly defined, with an emphasis on the period from c. 1700 to the present. The position also includes marking at all levels, as well as administrative duties in accordance with the needs of the department.
Qualifications:
- PhD or equivalent academic qualifications in art history and visual studies, with specialisation in Nordic art and visual culture from approximately 1700 to the present
- Documented teaching experience in art history and visual studies at multiple levels

In the assessment of qualified applicants, the following will be emphasised:
- Academic qualifications and scholarly output in art history and visual studies, with particular emphasis on work published within the last five years. Originality and innovative thinking will be weighted more heavily than volume. Output will be assessed in relation to the applicant’s career stage
- Innovative theoretical and methodological competence, and the ability to relate this to ongoing research and teaching within the academic group at the department
- Experience in initiating and carrying out major research projects
- Experience with and ability to develop academic networks
- Potential to contribute to the long-term development of the department’s academic and research environment
- Pedagogical qualifications, documented results in teaching and supervision, and the ability to engage and inspire students
- Creativity in the development of courses and teaching activities, including pedagogical self-reflection
- Interest in and aptitude for leadership and administration

- Skills in public dissemination and engagement with wider society

The appointee must be proficient in English and in a Scandinavian language as a working language. If the successful candidate does not have proficiency in a Scandinavian language at the time of appointment, they are expected to acquire skills corresponding to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) within two years. Within three years, the appointee is expected to be able to participate actively in all aspects of the position, including teaching, in Norwegian. The Faculty of Humanities will provide language training.

Selection procedure:
- As the first step in the evaluation process, a Selection Committee will assess all applications and invite the most qualified applicants to submit a portfolio of educational certificates and academic works (up to 10 publications, which should not exceed 500 pages in total) for expert assessment. Academic texts shall therefore not be enclosed with the application.
- Applicants who are invited to submit academic works are asked to select three works, published within the last 5 years, to be considered as most relevant for the position. In longer publications (monographs), applicants should specify the relevant pages.
- Applicants are also asked to submit a Educational portfolio of 3-6 pages documenting educational competence and experience, including a reflection note in which your own practice and learning vision is anchored in the SoTL criteria (focus on student learning, development over time, a research approach and a collegial attitude and practice).
- Finally, the most highly ranked candidates will be invited for an interview and a trial lecture.
