This year, the Imperial Armoury of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, is once again hosting a series of virtual and in-person lectures. As part of RüstkammerTalk, international experts from various disciplines will come together to offer new and unexpected perspectives on the Habsburgs’ historical arms collection.

This year’s programme offers a wide-ranging selection of topics - from the courtly hunt to Renaissance military architecture. Due to its 500th anniversary, the fateful Battle of Mohács is also in the spotlight. In 1526, the Hungarian army under King Louis II suffered a crushing defeat at the hands Sultan Suleiman I’s troops. As a result, the Ottoman Empire was able to conquer large parts of Hungary. At the same time, with the death of Louis II on the battlefield, the crowns of Hungary and Bohemia passed to the future Emperor Ferdinand I - an important step in the Habsburg dynasty’s development into a European superpower. In the late sixteenth century, Archduke Ferdinand II acquired magnificent armours and weapons belonging to the protagonists of both sides at Mohács for his “Armoury of Heroes” at Ambras Castle, Innsbruck. These are still on display today in the Imperial Armoury.

Dieses Jahr veranstaltet die Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer des Kunsthistorischen Museums in Wien erneut eine Reihe von Vorträgen im digitalen und analogen Format. Im Rahmen der RüstkammerTalks finden internationale Expert:innen aus verschiedenen Disziplinen zusammen, um neue, ungewohnte Perspektiven auf die historische Waffensammlung der Habsburger zu eröffnen.

Heuer bietet das Programm eine breitgefächerte Auswahl von Themen - von der höfischen Jagd bis hin zur Festungsarchitektur der Renaissance. Aus aktuellem Anlass rückt auch die folgenschwere Schlacht bei Mohács (1526) in den Fokus. Vor 500 Jahren erlitt das ungarische Heer unter König Ludwig II. eine vernichtende Niederlage gegen die Truppen Sultan Süleymans I. Das Osmanische Reich konnte in Folge große Teile Ungarns erobern. Gleichsam fielen durch den Tod Ludwigs II. auf dem Schlachtfeld die Kronen von Ungarn und Böhmen an den späteren Kaiser Ferdinand I. – ein wichtiger Schritt im Aufstieg des Hauses Habsburg zur europäischen Großmacht. Im späten 16. Jahrhundert bemühte sich Erzherzog Ferdinand II., prächtige Harnische und Waffen der Protagonisten beider Lager von Mohács für seine „Heldenrüstkammer“ auf Schloss Ambras zu gewinnen. Noch heute sind diese in der Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer vertreten.
