History, Theory, and Heritage at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) Lausanne.
Two fully funded doctoral positions are available to begin in the 2026-27 academic year, working primarily with Professor Cammy Brothers (https://actu.epfl.ch/news/appointment-of-epfl-professors-178/).
Candidates should have a background in the history of art, architecture, or related disciplines; an undergraduate or masters degree expected by July, 2026; demonstrable writing and research skills; an interest in Early Modern art and architecture of Italy, Spain, or the Mediterranean world; and an appropriate language background (including English fluency and knowledge of languages relevant to proposed research area). Knowledge of French is not a criterion for evaluation, but successful candidates will be encouraged to learn French upon acceptance; courses are available at EPFL.
Applications should send the following in a single pdf by February 6, 2026:
- a letter of interest (1 page) indicating the candidate's background and reason for pursuing doctoral study
- a writing sample (between 5 and 20 pages), for example an undergraduate seminar paper or chapter of a masters’ thesis
- a description of the proposed doctoral research project (2-4 pages)
- an academic and/or professional c.v. (no more than two pages), including full educational background and language knowledge
- the names and contact information of two references (reference letters themselves will be solicited later in the evaluation process)
