Women in action. Women's artistic practices in the Hispanic Middle Ages.
The MARCAM project will hold the conference “Women in action. Women’s artistic practices in the Hispanic Middle Ages” in Madrid, from 12 to 14 November 2025.
This conference proposes to explore women’s artistic practices, understood from a broad perspective that goes beyond their role as artists or promoters. Topics such as the use of art as a means of self-representation, the intersection between art and royal or nobiliary power, and material culture as a catalyst for female networks will be addressed. It will also analyse the figure of women as active consumers (and in this sense re-elaborators) of works of art, as well as the multiple ways in which the arts acted as tools of feminine action – political, social, memorial or legal – or, on the contrary, as instruments for the normativisation of femininity.
The geographical focus of this conference is on the Iberian Peninsula, but case studies from other regions will be welcome in order to establish a comparative perspective.
We invite submissions for papers in Spanish, English, Portuguese, Italian or French.
Respondents should submit a 500 word proposal and a short cv (250 words) to proyectomarcamgmail.com before 8 September 2025. Accepted proposals will receive confirmaation by 15th September.
