Vorbehaltlich des endgültigen Entscheids des Schweizerischen Nationalfonds über die Verlängerung des Nationalen Forschungsschwerpunkts "Medienwandel – Medienwechsel – Medienwissen. Historische Perspektiven" an der Universität Zürich sind im Rahmen des Moduls "The Art of Display" ab dem 1. Oktober 2013 oder nach Vereinbarung

2 Doktorandenstellen (100%) im Bereich Kunst-/Architekturgeschichte

mit einer Laufzeit von drei Jahren zu besetzen. Das Forschungsmodul setzt sich zum Ziel, den grundlegenden Zeige- und Schaucharakter von Kunst und Architektur historisch zu erkunden. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem architektonischen und räumlichen Zeigegestus, der sich sowohl im gebauten Kontext wie auch im präsentierten Werk manifestiert. Der Begriff des Displays soll nicht nur die Präsentation von Bildern und das Ausstellen von Kunstwerken bezeichnen, sondern auch im Zusammenhang mit der ostentativen Funktion von Bildern und Artefakten selbst untersucht werden. Mögliche Themen für Forschungsarbeiten drehen sich um räumliche und architektonische Dispositive des Ausstellens in historischer Perspektive, um parergonale Aspekte des Rahmens und Zeigens visueller Artefakte oder um Rahmen- und Schwellenmotive im Kunstwerk selbst. Ziel des Projekts ist es, visuelle Ostentation besonders auf ihre Räumlichkeit hin zu untersuchen und die verschiedenen Formen räumlichen Displays auf ihre ästhetische Wirksamkeit und auf ihre historische Bedingtheit hin zu beleuchten.

Erfolgreiche BewerberInnen verfügen über einen sehr guten Studienabschluss in Kunstgeschichte oder einer verwandten Disziplin und einen hohen Grad an historischem und theoretischem Wissen im Bereich der Kunst- und Architekturgeschichte. Sie sind an interdisziplinären und medientheoretischen Fragestellungen interessiert.

Die Anstellungsbedingungen richten sich nach den Massgaben der Universität Zürich und des Schweizerischen Nationalfonds. Der Arbeitsvertrag wird bei einer Probezeit von sechs Monaten jährlich erneuert. Ein Wohnort in der Stadt oder Region Zürich wird ab Anstellungsbeginn vorausgesetzt. Es wird erwartet, dass die Promotion an der Universität Zürich erfolgt.

Subject to final approval by the Swiss National Science Foundation for the continuation of the National Centre of Competence in Research program "Mediality – Historical Perspectives" at the University of Zürich, we invite applications for the position of

in the framework of the module "The Art of Display.". The research group aims to explore display as a fundamental characteristic of art and architecture. Research will focus on architectural and spatial gestures of display, both in the built environment and in the exhibited work of art. The term "display" not only refers to the presentation of images and the display of works of art, but will be questioned in relationship to the demonstrative functions of pictures and artifacts themselves. Possible topics for PhD theses may focus upon spatial and architectural devices of display in a historical perspective, parergonal aspects of framing and display of visual artifacts, and motifs of framing and transgression in the work of art itself. The objective of the project is to investigate visual display with particular regard to its spatial dimension, and to theorize different forms of spatial display in terms of both aesthetic efficacy and their specific historical conditions.

Successful applicants will have an excellent M.A. degree or equivalent qualification in the history of art or in a related discipline. They will demonstrate a high degree of historical and theoretical knowledge in art and architectural history as well as interest in interdisciplinary discourse and the theory of media.

Employment conditions follow the guidelines as established by the University of Zurich and the Swiss National Science Foundation. The contract is renewed annually up to three years total; an initial probation period of six months applies. Residency within the city of Zurich or its environs is expected. Candidates earn their doctorate from the University of Zurich.
