“Le jeu savant”. Light and Darkness in XX Century Architecture
Publication and Conference

CALL FOR PAPERS - English Version
[Testo in italiano in fondo]

With this well-known statement of 1923, Le Corbusier reaffirmed the
role of light as the revealer of architecture. This was nothing new,
of course, and yet in the context of a re-founding of the discipline
in a modernist key, these words register some changes in attitude,
such as the increasing attention to the orientation and the exposure
of buildings.

The period under consideration here begins with the first decade of
the twentieth century, when a reconsideration of the relation between
light and architecture intensified in diverse countries and in
different fields. If from one perspective, that moment saw important
scientific and technological advancement accomplished with an
increased knowledge of the salutary effects of light both natural and
artificial, Frank Lloyd Wright’s rallying cry from 1931 shows another:
“Shadows were the ‘brushwork’ of the ancient Architect. Let the
‘modern’ now work with light, light diffused, light reflected, light
refracted--light for its own sake, shadows gratuitous.” Thus, while
some people reduced light to its measurable hygienic aspects, other
people were still looking at light from an aesthetic or symbolic point
of view. This period’s chronological arc closes in the 1990s, before
the advent of new technologies of artificial and energy-saving
illumination.

This publication and the conference solicit reflection on the theme of
light, as gleaned both from theoretical production and from actual
projects, throughout the twentieth century. Contributions are
integrated within the project financed by the Swiss National Science
Foundation and organized by Daniela Mondini “From Ravenna to Vals,
Light and Darkness from the Middle Ages to the Present.”

Contributors should concentrate on the following thematic nuclei.

1 - The representation of light and its effects within architectural
space.
The intangible nature of light renders it difficult to represent it
graphically, obtainable generally only through the drawing of its
opposite: shadow. For this, one takes advantage of the most
traditional instruments for the representation of architecture: the
technical drawing, painting and photography. Using scientific
measurement, the description of light in texts, and its presence in
the filmic arts, whether video, documentary or film, one can also
appreciate the dynamic quality of the phenomenon. Through different
media this section investigates the possible forms of the
representation of the effects of light and shadow within the twentieth
century.

2 - The exposure and orientation of the building.
During the first decades of the twentieth century, the orientation of
streets and buildings received renewed attention and importance,
mainly as a result of new discoveries in the field of hygiene.
Treatises by William Atkinson and Augustin Rey give evidence for this.
As a result, some architects demanded maximal insolation of buildings,
sometimes in a rather one-sided way. At least since antibiotics and
vitamin compounds partially replaced sun-treatments in medicine and
since construction in tropical regions became an important topic in
architectural discourse, comprehensive climate control became a
priority over insolation. Depending among other things on the
importance given to energy saving, different results were achieved.
This section proposes to compare suggestive case studies, both
theoretical and planning-based.

3 - Devices for the manipulation of natural light (glass, windows,
screens, systems of dimming and sun-protection)
Because of the variances of seasons, latitudes, and hours of the day,
the practice of architecture evidences the necessity of designing a
comfortable interior, whether for a domestic, hospital, or working
space, making both possible and facile the regulation of the supply of
air and light. This section analyses the quality of utilized materials
and the technologies of opening and closing.

4 - Artificial Light
Today, in the age of the LED, the incandescent light bulb seems
obsolete. And yet, its simple image in the form of a “bare bulb”
continues to be an icon of modernity and technological progress. This
section proposes to investigate the diverse forms and applications of
systems of artificial illumination and the relationship that they
establish with the architectural space in which they are installed,
underlining similarities and differences with respect to the natural
illumination

Proposals of a maximum of 3,000 characters (spaces included) should be
sent in .doc/.docx or .pdf format by 10 April, 2013 to the address
lejeusavantgmail.com. They can be written in Italian, English,
French, or German. Applications should contain: name and surname of
the author, title, abstract, an indication of the section in which the
applicant wishes to participate, curriculum vitae of the author. The
results will be announced by the end of April.
Texts for publication (maximum of 20,000 characters, spaces included
and 5 images, free of copyright) must be delivered by 20 September,
2013.
The conference will be held on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 of October
2014, at the Accademia di architettura in Mendrisio. On this occasion,
the volume with the contributions of the participants will be
presented. The organization will provide the participants’
accommodation expenses for the three days (two nights) of the
conference.

CALL FOR PAPERS – Testo in italiano
“Le jeu savant”. Luce e oscurità nell’Architettura del XX secolo

chiave modernista queste parole registrano alcuni cambiamenti in atto,
come la crescente attenzione all’orientamento e all’esposizione degli
edifici.

In quel momento,
artificiale. “Shadows were the ‹brushwork› of the ancient Architect.
Let the ‘Modern’ now work with light, light diffused, light reflected,
light refracted - light for its own sake, shadows gratuitous.”

2 - Esposizione e orientamento dell'edificio
spesso in modo unilaterale.
A seconda

installati, sottolineando similitudini e differenze rispetto
all’illuminazione naturale degli stessi.

all’indirizzo lejeusavantgmail.com Sono ammessi testi redatti in
italiano, inglese, francese, tedesco. Le domande di partecipazione
devono contenere: nome e cognome dell’autore, titolo, abstract,
indicazione della sezione di riferimento, curriculum vitae
dell’autore.
