The Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London
Two Lectureships in 20th-century Modernism
(£33,465-£45,446 pa inc London Allowance)
The Courtauld Institute of Art is the UK's leading institution for teaching and research into the History of Art and the conservation of paintings, and has a distinguished history of scholarship and teaching in Modernist art. It is also home to one of the finest small art museums in the world.
The Courtauld seeks to build on these strong foundations by appointing two permanent full-time lecturers in twentieth-century Modernism. The positions are open to specialists in any medium - architecture, painting, sculpture, or the graphic arts - whose research interests complement those of the Institute's current permanent staff. The post-holders will be expected to provide teaching in the area of European (including British) Modernism c.1900-1940, although candidates with an interest in non-Western forms of Modernism are also encouraged to apply. Candidates will also be expected to develop collaborative courses, and to contribute to the teaching of art-historical methodology. The minimum requirements for the post are a DPhil or PhD and some teaching experience.
We are looking for individuals who will bring a new intellectual dimension to our community; who will attract doctoral students of the highest calibre; and who will enhance the Courtauld's reputation for innovative teaching and ground-breaking research. The selectors will place considerable emphasis on each candidate's publications, achievements and future research plans. They will be looking for strong indications of the capacity to initiate collaborative research; the candidate should also be able to outline possible research grant applications. The starting date for both lectureships is September 2013.
