I Encontro Internacional Memórias de Música: Casas-Museu no Espaço Ibérico

CALL FOR PAPERS

In the Iberian Peninsula, house-museums are material and immaterial testimonies of the experiences of their patrons. Each house is a world, as Marcel Benedito Gonzalez summarized, and an imaginary museum, as André Malraux reflected in his 1947 essay. House-museums place in dialogue, within the same building, the domestic space, the creative space, and the institutional one. They can preserve a vast musical heritage resulting from this functional hybridity, which requires in-depth study. What memories of music? What are its material and immaterial
testimonies, iconographies, documentation, architectures, or musical
instruments? The question is undoubtedly very complex, considering that each house-museum has a particular idiosyncrasy, closely linked to its historical evolution, architectural configuration (palaces, houses, and contemporary buildings), rural or urban location, and the surrounding community. However, it is this heterogeneity that paradoxically lends uniqueness to the object. This conference aims to delve into all of this, addressing both the sound legacies of periods prior to the musealization of the homes, as well as the musical manifestations that occurred after this process. Thus, the academic community is invited to submit proposals for presentations on past and present musical practices in Iberian house-museums, the documentary collections, objects, and
images that preserve them, as well as other related activities that make the house-museum a cultural (specifically musical) center of its environment.

The following themes are proposed:
• Architecture: the house-museum; the house-workshop; the garden and
the house as musical spaces; the musician-patron versus the house-museum.
• Collections of scores, letters, and other music-related documentation in the house-museum.
• Organology and musical instruments: materiality and practices in the
intimate space of the house.
• Musical iconography in different artistic typologies – painting, sculpture, decorative arts, among others; inventory, critical study, methodologies for approach and dissemination.
• Musical practices and experiences in the domestic space.
• Resident musical ensembles and cultural projects with sound presence.
• Photography and moving images documenting experiences associated
with musical memories.
• Others.

We encourage research centers to motivate their young students, researchers, collaborators, and integrated members to submit original and unpublished proposals, either collective or individual, thus marking their presence at this scientific event, which aims to be plural and illustrative of the research landscape on the topics mentioned above. The submission of proposals is conducted anonymously by the scientific committee.
