Art Review Oxford, a print triannual contemporary art journal based at the University of Oxford, seeks concise and accessible texts and artworks related to the theme of its eleventh edition, “Spectral Ecologies.”
Spectral Ecologies refers to the ecological dimension of memory – that is, the intersection of environmental and archival hauntings and the ‘recovery’ of the past through artistic practices. Contributions should focus on the role of artistic practices in articulating the inscription of the past upon present landscapes.
Points of interest may include:
• Ghosts of empire, afterlives of colonialism, colonial extractivism and ecocide.
• Physical and metaphorical ruins as sites of return and projection.
• Interventions within archives, institutional and natural.
• Visual, aural, and other sensory encounters with past and present landscapes.
• Human and nonhuman memories of the environment.
Texts, which may include critical and creative essays and reviews, should be between 700 and 1200 words long.
We are also searching for artists, designers, photographers and makers to contribute work, or collections of their work, to be considered for publication and potential display.
Work can be submitted in any capacity, medium, or style suitable for digital and print publication.
Deadline for submission is March 5th.
Please send all submissions (and queries) to artreviewoxfordgmail.com.
