Culture and Globalization: New Approaches (2024-25 Artls/Visual Contagions Seminar),
online, September 20, 2024 - May 16, 2025.

The monthly online seminar will delve into new perspectives on the historical concept of cultural globalization, with culture being understood as encompassing the practices and representations related to knowledge, beliefs, arts, laws, and customs within societies at both individual and collective levels. Instead of simply observing similarities or differences in cultural practices on a global, regional, national, or local scale, historiography is increasingly focusing on the social life of objects (A. Appadurai), the circulation of forms such as images, sounds, texts, and words, and the technical, gendered, and ecological aspects of the global circulation of cultural objects since the late 18th century.
Furthermore, considering the overwhelming amount of cultural data analysis available for contemporary culture, is it possible, and how and under what conditions, to include cross-sectional studies of older cultural forms, and how can these be articulated with non-computational historical perspectives?

The 2024-25 Artls/Visual Contagions Seminar is organized by Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel (University of Geneva), Ludovic Tournès (University of Geneva) and Catherine Dossin (Purdue University).
