International Conference: "A Church, A Mosque: Interdisciplinary conversations between architecture and art history", Cairo, Institut français d'archéologie orientale, October 23-24, 2024.

Until now, the origins and evolution of the architectural typologies of both monotheistic religions have been considered as an isolated phenomenon insofar as research has focused on the monographic study of monuments. Using a novel method, this conference aims to focus on a comparison based on a precise selection of case studies, in order to understand the returns of these different typologies to their unique origins, the processes of contamination, the circulation of models and conversion strategies.

The interdisciplinary dimension of this conference is hoped through the participation of archaeologists, art historians and historians specializing in the field of liturgy. This dialogue will help to answer the following question: to what extent do functional, aesthetic or semantic criteria determine the dynamics of the evolution and metamorphosis of these constructions? Drawing on the results of the colloquia held in Istanbul (2017), New York (2019) and Rome (2022), this new event will focus on the evolution of the mosque in Egypt and seek to place it in the context of the genesis of this typology within the Mediterranean tradition:

- the influence of religious traditions on the designs, uses and continuation of mosques in Egypt and the ancient Mediterranean.

- the innovation versus tradition in the art and architecture of mosques in Egypt and the ancient Mediterranean.

- How cultural history illuminated understanding of changes of traditions in architecture and art history of churches and mosques in Egypt and the ancient Mediterranean.

Conférence internationale : «Une église, une mosquée: Conversations interdisciplinaires entre l'architecture et l'histoire de l'art», Le Caire, Institut français d'archéologie orientale, 23-24 octobre 2024.

Jusqu’à maintenant, les origines et les évolutions des typologies architecturales des deux religions monothéistes ont été considérées comme un phénomène isolé dans la mesure où la recherche a privilégié l’étude monographique des monuments. En s’appuyant sur une méthode inédite, ce projet met l’accent sur une confrontation fondée sur un choix précis de témoignages, afin de comprendre les retours de ces différentes typologies aux origines uniques, les processus de contamination, la circulation des modèles et les stratégies de conversion. La dimension interdisciplinaire du projet est assurée par la participation d’archéologues, d’historiens de l’art et d’historiens spécialisés dans le domaine de la liturgie.

Ce dialogue permettra de répondre à la question suivante: jusqu’à quel point, des critères fonctionnels, esthétiques ou sémantiques déterminent-ils les dynamismes de l’évolution et la métamorphose de ces constructions ? En exploitant les résultats des colloques qui ont eu lieu à Istanbul (2017), à New York (2019) et à Rome (2022), cette nouvelle manifestation se concentrera sur l’évolution de la mosquée en Égypte et cherchera à la replacer dans le contexte de la genèse de cette typologie au sein de la tradition méditerranéenne:

- l'influence des traditions religieuses sur la conception, l'utilisation et le maintien des églises et des mosquées.

- l'innovation par rapport à la tradition dans l'art et l'architecture des mosquées en Egypte et l'ancienne Méditerranée.

- Comment l'histoire culturelle a éclairé la compréhension des changements de traditions dans l'architecture et l'histoire de l'art des églises et des mosquées en Egypte et l'ancienne Méditerranée.
