9th Conference on Modern Art:
American Art of the 20th and 21st Centuries and Polish-American Artistic Relations.
The Polish Institute of Studies of World Art, the Department of the History of Modern and Non-European Art at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Nicolaus Copernicus University, and the Centre for Contemporary Art “Signs of he Times” in Toruń extend an invitation to participate in the 9th Conference on Modern Art in Toruń, American Art of the 20th and 21st Centuries and Polish-American Artistic Relations, which will take place in mid-October 2023.
The aim of the conference is to present Polish research into American art from the Armory Show of 1913 to the present day, as well as into relations between Polish and American art. It takes into account painting, printmaking, drawing, sculpture, architecture, photography, performance and happenings, together with art in new media. Questions regarding American art which are of particular significance to Polish researchers and artists include the reception in the United States of the European avant-garde from the Armory Show onwards, New York Dadaism and Surrealism, American artists working in European avant-garde circles, particularly in Paris, emigration by European artists to the United States after 1933, artistic circles in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and other centres, Abstract Expressionism, Modernism and Postmodernism, Pop Art, Conceptualism, film as a medium, Neoexpressionism during the 1970s and 1980s, Post-conceptualism and Postmodernism at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, and new media in American art.
Presentations will also take as their subject the work of Polish artists and the activities of Polish institutions in the United States, the exchange of exhibitions, and relations between Polish and American art.
A significant theme of the conference will be consideration of questions regarding art theory and art criticism, art education and the everyday life of artists, museums, art institutions and the art press.
The organisers invite art historians and art critics, scholars specialising in American Studies, cultural anthropologists, exhibition and museum curators, and artists to participate in the conference.
The conference will be conducted in both Polish and English.

Please submit titles and abstracts (up to half a page in length) of proposed papers before 30th June 2023. Decisions regarding acceptance of proposals will be made by 15th July 2023.

The organisers of the conference do not anticipate there being any fee for the conference, and will not cover the cost of travel, accommodation or meals.
The conference will lead to a peer-reviewed scholarly monograph in English, in the series “Studia o sztuce nowoczesnej / Studies on modern art”, consisting of essays submitted by participants before a specified deadline and accepted by the Organising Committee.

The Organising Committee comprises Dr. Katarzyna Cytlak, Dr. Małgorzata Geron, Professor Jerzy Malinowski and Dr. Filip Pręgowski.
