Call for Contributions for the hybrid International Conference on Architecture as Built Criticism.
Can buildings themselves express criticism? If so, how do they achieve it? To whom is this criticism addressed? How are they legible? How do these criticisms impact society and culture?
How do architects, critics or historians read these forms of criticism?
Following the International Conferences on Architectural Criticism in October 2021, and on Architectural Quality in October 2022, this year's conference seeks papers that offer realized examples of architecture as built criticism.
Abstracts (max. 500 words) should outline a definition of architecture as built criticism, and name one case study. Abstracts should be submitted to icabc.abstractgmail.com
The selection to the conference is in two stages: first, the acceptance of the abstract; second, authors will develop their abstracts into draft papers. Based on these papers, authors will be invited to speak in one of four sessions together with four selected keynote lecturers during the hybrid conference 14–15 October 2022, hosted by the School of Architecture, Tongji University, Shanghai, China.
As with the first two conferences, the conference papers are intended to be published in book published by Park Books of Zurich.
Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu, Shanghai
Tosin Oshinowo, Lagos
Al Borde, Quito
Juhani Pallasmaa, Helsinki
Li Xiangning and Wilfried Wang
Tongji University, Shanghai
The hybrid format of the four-session conference allows for active debate between the audience and lecturers. Presentations will be concentrated to allow for ample discussion time. Besides the four keynotes, there will be between 12 to 16 short papers. The entire conference will be recorded and placed on Youtube. The conference language will be English. Registration for free attendance will open on 2 September via icabc.registergmail.com
