AHRC-funded CDP: Plants and Pedagogy: The Role of Female Botanical Artists in Medical Education, 1726-1961.

The University of Bristol (UoB) and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) are pleased to announce the availability of this fully-funded AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Studentship. The scholarship includes fees and a maintenance stipend.

The project will draw on collections of botanical teaching diagrams at RBGE to situate female artists in relation to an important yet little-noticed dimension of botanical illustration, namely, its role in the teaching of medicine.

The project will be supervised by Dr Grace Brockington (UoB), Professor Ulrika Maude (UoB), Emma Nicolson (RBGE) and Lorna Mitchell (RBGE). The student will be expected to spend most of their time at RBGE with regular visits to Bristol. They will also consult other collections and participate in events run by the Collaborative Doctoral Partnership Consortium.

The studentship is open to both Home and International (including EU) applicants and can be studied either full-time or part-time. We are committed to ensuring equality of opportunity and encourage applications from a diverse range of backgrounds.

The duration is 45 months.

The value of the stipend has yet to be released for 2023/24, but we can say that:
The award pays maintenance at the National Minimum Doctoral Stipend rate. This has yet to be confirmed for 2023/24. As an indication, the stipend for 2022/23 was £17,668 plus a CDP maintenance payment of £550/year. RBGE offers an additional travel and related expenses worth up to £1000 per year for the funded duration of the project.
