Temporary Assistant Professor, Department of Art History, University of Delaware

16.08.2023–31.05.2024
Bewerbungsschluss: 30.04.2023

Cristen Smith

The Department of Art History in the College of Arts and Sciences is seeking to fill a Temporary Assistant Professor position in nineteenth- and twentieth- century art history, beginning August 16, 2023.  We especially welcome candidates whose teaching focuses on the art of any region within Africa, South Asia, or South America. This position will complement our current teaching and scholarly depth in the early modern Iberian world, East Asia, and the Americas. The Art History Department encourages historical rigor, methodological pluralism, and interdisciplinary dialogue, and is committed to the core values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The position involves teaching undergraduate courses at all levels of the curriculum, from introductory courses geared to non-majors to focused seminars. The teaching load is four in-person courses per semester, with the goal of two or three course preps per semester. This position offers a strong, supportive setting for a teaching-intensive role in the environment of an active research department with robust undergraduate and graduate programs.

This is a one-year position but may be renewed (depending on performance, funding, and departmental course needs) for a second year.

We seek to enhance the breadth of art history education in our Department as well as the diversity of our faculty. Our Department and University strongly encourage applications from members of diverse groups and backgrounds including women, LGBTQ people, racial and ethnic minorities, and all other groups underrepresented in the Humanities.

Our department is committed to providing quality undergraduate educational experiences within a research-focused department. The ideal candidate will have experience in teaching art history to majors and non-majors, including core concepts as well as more specialized subject matter. Some experience in teaching introductory-to-intermediate level courses, as well as teaching upper-level students, is preferred. Demonstrable commitment to mentoring a diverse student population is especially desirable. Temporary faculty may also have the opportunity to contribute to committees that support Department functions and academic programs, as well as departmental teaching and research workshops, retreats, seminars, etc.

Applicants for this position must be advanced ABD or have earned a Ph.D. by September 1, 2023, in art history or a related field and have some experience teaching or mentoring undergraduates. Successful candidates should provide evidence that they are engaged in evidence-based, inclusive, and reflective teaching practices.

For additional information about the position, please email search committee chair Professor Sandy Isenstadt: isntudel.edu (please indicate "Temporary Faculty Search" in the subject line).

To apply: Review of applications will begin April 14, 2023. Applicants should upload the following materials: an application letter; CV; a 2-page statement of teaching philosophy; sample syllabi for an introductory lecture course, and either an intermediate-level course or a senior seminar; a 1-page statement addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion; names and contact information of three references who can provide letters of recommendation. https://careers.udel.edu/cw/en-us/job/499830/temporary-assistant-professor-department-of-art-history
