Call for Applications
Das Goethe-Institut, das documenta archiv |documenta und Museum Fridericianum gGmbH und die Kunsthochschule Kassel vergeben für den Zeitraum ab Juni 2023 bis November 2023 zwei Fellowships an internationale Wissenschaftler:innen, Künstler:innen und Kurator:innen. Zur Bewerbung aufgefordert sind insbesondere auch Forschende aus bisher im hiesigen Kunst-und Wissenschaftsbetrieb wenig vertretenen Kontexten. Die Stipendiat:innen sind für die Dauer von sechs Monaten eingeladen, in Kassel unter Einbeziehung der reichen Bestände des documenta archivs ein Thema zu bearbeiten, das neue Perspektiven auf die documenta und ihre transnationalen Zusammenhänge eröffnet.
Die Fellows profitieren von einem intensiven material- und objektbezogenen Arbeitsumfeld, dem Austausch mit Wissenschaftler:innen und Künstler:innen vor Ort, der aktiven Einbindung in das Forschungs- und Veranstaltungsprogramm der ausschreibenden Institutionen, sowie von organisatorischer und fachlicher Unterstützung. Eine Präsentation der Forschungsergebnisse in Kassel und in international sichtbaren Publikations-/Veröffentlichungsforen ist erwünscht.
Das Goethe-Institut Fellowship erlaubt es, vielfältige kunstwissenschaftliche, künstlerische und zeitgeschichtliche Fragestellungen entlang der documenta Ausstellungen auch transdisziplinär zu erforschen. Denkbar sind Themen, die einzelne Akteur:innen oder Gruppen, kuratorische und künstlerische Praktiken bzw. die Mechanismen der Kunstproduktion, -präsentation und -rezeption mit Blick auf die documenta behandeln. Das Programm will Raum dafür geben, westeuropäisch / nordamerikanisch geprägte Diskurse kritisch zu reflektieren und alternative Sichtweisen zu entwickeln.

Erwartete Qualifikationen und Anforderungen:
- Ausgezeichnete Kenntnisse der modernen und zeitgenössischen Kunst, ausgeprägtes Interesse an den in der Ausschreibung genannten Forschungsgebieten
- Erfahrungen mit Archiv-Recherchen; nachgewiesene Leistungen in bereits realisierten Projekten auf dem Gebiet der wissenschaftlichen, künstlerischen oder kuratorischen Forschung
- Residenzpflicht in Kassel
- Nachgewiesene Kenntnisse der deutschen Sprache, idealerweise im Rahmen von Stufe C1
- Bewerbungen von Personen, deren Arbeits- oder Lebensmittelpunkt sich in Deutschland oder im deutschsprachigen Ausland befindet, können nicht berücksichtigt werden.

Leistungen:
- Die Dauer der Stipendien ist auf sechs Monate beschränkt, mit einer Laufzeit vom 1. Juni 2023 bis 30. November 2023, der Forschungsaufenthalt soll nach Möglichkeit spätestens am 15. Juni 2023 beginnen.
- Die Dotierung beträgt 2.000 Euro monatlich. Eine Krankenversicherung muss von den Stipendiat:innen auf eigene Kosten abgeschlossen und ein Nachweis vorgelegt werden. Reisekostenzuschüsse sind vorgesehen.
- Das Goethe-Institut unterstützt die Fellows bei der Beantragung von Visa und sonstigen Reiseformalitäten des Herkunftslandes. Das documenta archiv unterstützt die Fellows nach der Ankunft in Deutschland bei Behördengängen, Wohnungssuche, Abschluss der Krankenversicherung u.ä.
- Während der Recherchen erhalten die Fellows umfassenden Zugang zu den Beständen des documenta archivs und werden bei ihrer Arbeit durch die wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiter:innen des documenta archivs und der Kunsthochschule Kassel betreut
- Das documenta archiv und die Kunsthochschule Kassel/Universität Kassel ermöglichen die Anbindung der Fellows an die akademische Praxis in Deutschland.

Die Bewerbung in Deutsch (im begründeten Ausnahmefall in Englisch) muss enthalten:

Bewerbungsschluss ist der 24. März 2023. Die Auswahl der Bewerber:innen nimmt ein dreiköpfiges Gremium vor, in dem das documenta archiv, das Goethe-Institut und die Kunsthochschule Kassel vertreten sind.

Goethe-Institut Fellowship at documenta archiv and Kunsthochschule Kassel art school

Call for Applications
Goethe-Institut, documenta archiv |documenta und Museum Fridericianum gGmbH, and Kunsthochschule Kassel art school will be awarding two fellowships to international scholars, artists, and curators taking place from June 2023 to November 2023. This call for applications is particularly extended to researchers from contexts which have received scarce representation in the local artistic and academic scene. The awardees will be invited to work in Kassel for six months on a topic which opens up new perspectives on documenta and its transnational links while drawing on the abundant holdings available at documenta archiv.

Fellows will benefit from a working environment featuring a wealth of material and object availability, interaction with scholars and artists on site, active involvement in the research and event programming of the awarding institutions, as well as organizational and professional support. Presentation of research results in Kassel as well as in publication/publishing forums with international visibility is desired.
This Goethe-Institut Fellowship allows for transdisciplinary research into a broad range of issues in aesthetics, art, and contemporary history along the documenta exhibitions. It is also possible to examine themes involving individual actors or groups, curatorial and artistic practices, and/or the mechanisms of art production, presentation, and reception with a view to documenta. This program aims to provide a venue to critically reflect on Western-European- / North-American-influenced discourses as well as to develop alternative perspectives.

Qualifications and requirements desired:
- Excellent knowledge of modern and contemporary art as well as a strong interest in the research areas outlined in the Call for Applications.
- Experience with archival research; demonstrated accomplishments from projects completed in a field of scholarly, artistic, or curatorial research.
- Residence in Kassel required during the fellowship
- Demonstration of knowledge of the German language, ideally at the C1 level

Services:
- The fellowships will be carried out from 1 June to 30 November 2023. As possible, the research stay should begin latest on 15 June 2023.
- Funding will be provided in the amount of 2,000 euros per month. A health insurance policy must be in place at the fellow’s own costs; proof of coverage must be provided. Travel allowances are available.
- Goethe-Institut will provide fellows with support in applying for visas as well as other travel formalities for their country of origin. After arrival in Germany, documenta archiv will provide fellows with support in interacting with authorities, finding accommodation, obtaining insurance coverage, etc.
- While carrying out their research, fellows will have comprehensive access to the holdings of documenta archiv and will receive support for their work from the academic staff at the archive and Kunsthochschule Kassel
- documenta archiv and Kunsthochschule Kassel/Universität Kassel will introduce fellows to academic practice in Germany.

Application process:
Applications must be handed in online via the application portal of the Goethe-Institut. The portal will be available from March 1. The application should be in German (in justified exceptional cases, in English) and encompass:
- Completed online application form
- brief biography
- abstract of the research project being planned, including time schedule and a proposal for presentation of the results
- curriculum vitae (incl. proof of German and other language skills)
- two reference letters
- Applications from researchers based in Germany or in German-speaking countries cannot be considered.

The application deadline is 24 March 2023. Applicant selection will be carried out by a three-member committee with representation for documenta archiv, Goethe-Institut, and Kunsthochschule Kassel.
