Panel Proposal for the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) Annual Convention

[1] Writings on Caricature and Cartoons in East Central Europe
From: Katarzyna Murawska-Muthesius, k.murawska-muthesiusbbk.ac.uk

Once it merged with the press and arrived in the public sphere, caricature has spread widely as a means of visual communication across the world, including the countries of Europe’s East. The rare studies on its historiography have so far been focalised on Italian, French, British, German and American texts. This panel aims to uncover and examine contributions to the theory of caricature written by East Central European authors from the nineteenth century to the present. Many of them, like Adolf Hofmeister, Boris Efimov or Eryk Lipiński, were caricaturists or cartoonists themselves. Nonetheless, the focus of the panel is on their analytical texts that investigate the modus operandi of caricature/cartoons, their critical drive targeting society, politics and art worlds, their discriminatory power, as well as their patrons and audiences. Analyses of caricature/ cartoons that are distinctly reflexive and provide commentary on their own conventions and relations to power are also encouraged.
Please bear in mind that all participants are expected to pay the ASEEES conference fee, regardless of their ASEEES membership status. On the rules of participation and fees, please consult https://www.aseees.org/convention/rules.

Please send proposals by 28 February to the Panel Organizer
