British Institute of Persian Studies Stronach Fellowship, York

University of York (UK), Feb 01, 2023
Application deadline: Dec 15, 2022

Tracey Milnes

The Department of History of Art at York seeks to appoint a Research Fellow. This position, initially for a 1-year appointment, has been created to employ someone to catalogue, research and publish material in the David Stronach Archive. David Stronach was a leading figure in the post-war period in the field of Iranian archaeology, and the project is being funded by the British Institute of Persian Studies.

In addition to the advertised salary, there is an additional £4,000 available to cover travel and other research expenses incurred in the course of undertaking the role.

The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Dr Richard McClary and the project is being directed by Dr John Curtis FBA. The material is currently being digitised at the Pourdavourd Centre for the Study of the Iranian World at UCLA, and the physical documentation will then be shipped from there to the UK.

The successful candidate will need to have a PhD in Archaeology, experience working on Iranian cultural heritage, be able to travel to the USA, and have excellent command of English.

Knowledge of Farsi would be an advantage, as would experience setting up databases and digitising archival material.

You should be developing a reputation in your field, with high-quality publications that address major questions, and well-developed plans for future research.

The Department of History of Art is one of the largest and most dynamic communities of art historians in the UK, with seventeen research-active colleagues who cover all periods from late antiquity to the present. The department ranked first in the UK for Environment and Impact in the recent Research Excellence Framework (2021), and in the top 10 overall.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop research objectives, projects, and proposals and carry out individual or collaborative research projects; to lead on and/or contribute to the production of research outputs and research outcomes, based on the material in the Stronach Archive.

There will be a shortlisting procedure based on CVs and cover letters. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted after 18 December 2022 and interviews will be held 9 January 2023.

Please direct informal enquiries to Dr Richard McClary, richard.mcclaryyork.ac.uk. The post is available from 1 February 2023.
