The Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (France Stele Institute of Art History), the University of Vienna and the University Jean-Monnet in Saint-Étienne cordially invite you to submit your proposals for the international conference
"The Potential of Prosopography for Historical and Art Historical Studies on the Charterhouses and the Carthusian Order"
The conference will be held in Ljubljana on August 23-25, 2023.
Deadline: 30 September 2022

The conference invites applications from researchers who can shed light on the
topic from a wide range of interdisciplinary perspectives and approaches. The
objective is not to present definitive results but to propose an initial reflection on
the methods and the possibilities of prosopographic research using the Carthusian
order as a starting point and model. The first step is therefore to present the
promising research perspectives in relation to the sources that can be used, how
to use them and the possible results:
- either from an example already analysed,
- or from remarkable sources that may raise questions about their
prosopographic treatment.
We therefore invite participants to think about what they would expect from a
prosopographic study and which “fields” they would like to see included in a
general database of a given order. We will thus be able to consider together the
following questions: is an overall prosopographic database of the order necessary?
Is it possible?
The following main topics are proposed, though applicants are by no means
limited to these and are also encouraged to submit additional topics:
- Perspectives of a common prosopographical database;
- Carthusians as holders of specific functions (priors, subpriors, definitors, visitators,
bishops, librarians, professors, etc.) from a prosopographical point of view;
- The mobility of the Order’s functional elite in light of its social and genealogical
networks;
- The Carthusians’ connections with founders, patrons, art commissioners,
benefactors, and ecclesiastical and noble authorties;
Mittelalter”, in: Johannes Feichtinger, Marianne Klemun, Jan Surman,
Petra Svatek (eds.), Wandlungen und Brüche: Wissenschaftsgeschichte
als politische Geschichte, Göttingen, 2018, 173-182; and Tom Gaens,

at the University of Leuven”, in: Les chartreux et les élites, XIIe – XVIIIIe
siècles, op. cit., 259-284 (AC, 298).
- The transfer of knowledge and artistic or other influences which resulted from the
networking of Carthusians with the nobility;
- General Chapters as meeting points for establishing new connections, with a
special focus on the following questions: what were the results of the personal
visits of the General Chapter? Who was given priority in the memoria? How did
the horizon of each Carthusian monastery expand after the visit of the General
Chapter? How did the charterhouses further develop? What changes have been
observed in the domains of book production and artistic output? Whose works
were copied?
- The Chartae of General Chapters and other crucial written sources for the history
of the Order as a source for prosopographical research;
- How connections with the secular nobility and other secular benefactors altered
the artistic and spiritual image of the Carthusian monasteries.

Please send your proposals for papers that can be presented in about 30 minutes
maximum in English, German, French, Spanish or Italian. The proposals should
include the following: the title, an abstract of about 250 words, and a short CV of
no more than a single page. Please submit your proposals to the conference e-mail
address – cfp.uifszrc-sazu.si – by 30 September 2022.
The selection of papers will be completed by 30 November 2022. Conference participants’ accommodation expenses and a visit to the Slovenian Charterhouses will be covered, though the participants will need to meet their own transport costs.
After the conference the Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of
Sciences and Arts, France Stele Institute of Art History will coordinate the publication
of an edited monograph of papers presented at the conference.
