Re·cast / Re·fundiciones: Presences and Processes in Latin American Sculpture

The University of Maryland Art Gallery and the Art Museum of the Americas (AMA) announce a Call for Proposals for the Symposium Re·cast / Re·fundiciones: Presences and Processes in Latin American Sculpture. The symposium will be held on October 26/27, 2022, at the University of Maryland as part of the public program for the exhibition, Re·cast 22 Sculptural Works from the AMA Collection, on view in Fall 2022 at the University of Maryland Art Gallery.

Curated by a group of graduate students from the UMD Department of Art History & Archaeology, the exhibition initiates new conversations about the artists, artworks, and cultural agents present in the collection of the Art Museum of the Americas | Organization of the American States (OAS). Established in 1957 by the OAS Permanent Council, AMA has accumulated a vast collection of artworks that bear witness to the emergence and consolidation of modernist movements and the divergent processes of artistic production across the region during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

The Symposium Committee invites paper proposals from graduate students, artists, and emerging scholars that analyze sculptural practices in the artistic production of the Americas during the 20th and 21st centuries. The malleable nature of the term “sculpture” and the pluralist paths followed by artists during this period allows us to invite contributions that address themes including:

· Artistic processes and techniques of sculpture in Latin America, the Caribbean, and/or the Americas

· Materiality and modernism in sculpture

· Sculpture and representations of the body and various facets of identity, including gender, race, sexuality, class, and ability

· Political, decolonial, and feminist critiques of modernism from the Latin American perspective with attention to their manifestation in sculptural practices

· Public sculpture, monuments, and the relationships between sculpture and national identities in Latin America

· Sculpture as embodiments of the modernizing spirit in Latin American cities

· Theories of perception, haptics, and the sensorial nature of sculpture

· Non-traditional and non-tridimensional practices of sculpture

· Collecting practices of sculptural works from Latin America

Interested participants are invited to submit a 300-word abstract and a CV/Resume no longer than three pages to recastsymposiumgmail.com by August 15, 2022. Accepted participants will be notified by September 2nd, 2022. Proposals can be in English, Spanish, and/or French.

Re·cast / Re·fundiciones: Presences and Processes in Latin American Sculpture will be held in person in College Park, Maryland, and will include a roundtable with Latin American artists represented in AMA’s collection moderated by Director Adriana Ospina. We are prepared to adjust the symposium’s format as needed on account of the COVID-19 pandemic.

La Galería de Arte de la Universidad de Maryland y el Museo de Arte de las Américas (AMA) presentan la siguiente Convocatoria para Propuestas para el Simposio Re·cast / Re·fundiciones: Presencias y Procesos en la escultura de Latinoamérica. El simposio se realizará en Octubre 26/27, 2022, en la Universidad de Maryland como parte del programa público de la exhibición Re·cast 22 Sculptural Works from the AMA Collection, a presentarse durante el Otoño 2022 en la Galería de Arte de la Universidad de Maryland.

Curada por un grupo de estudiantes del Departamento de Historia del Arte & Arqueología de UMD, esta exhibición inicia nuevas conversaciones en torno a los artistas, obras de arte y agentes culturales presentes en la colección del Museo de Arte de las Américas | Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA). Establecido en 1957 por el Consejo Permanente de la OEA, AMA reúne una colección vasta de obras que atestiguan la emergencia y consolidación de distintos movimientos modernos, así como los procesos divergentes de producción artística a lo largo de la región durante los siglos veinte y veintiuno.

El comité de organización del Simposio convoca la presentación de propuestas de presentaciones de estudiantes de posgrado, artistas e investigadores emergentes que analicen la práctica de la escultura en la producción artística de las Américas durante los siglos XX y XXI. La naturaleza maleable del término “escultura” y los caminos plurales seguidos por los artistas durante este periodo nos permiten invitar contribuciones que traten temas como:

· Procesos artísticos y técnicas en la escultura de Latinoamérica, el Caribe y/o las Américas

· Materialidad y modernismo en la escultura

· Escultura y representaciones del cuerpo y sus distintas facetas de identidad, incluyendo, pero no limitándose a género, raza, sexualidad y clase

· Criticas nacidas en estudios políticos, decoloniales y feminismo(s) de la modernidad con una perspectiva Latinoamericana, con especial atención a su manifestación en prácticas escultóricas

· Escultura púbica, monumentos y las relaciones entre escultura e identidades nacionales en Latinoamérica

· Escultura y su materialización del espíritu de modernización en las ciudades latinoamericanas

· Teorías de la percepción, háptica y la naturaleza sensorial de la escultura

· Prácticas no tradicionales y no tridimensionales de la escultura

· Prácticas de coleccionismo de obras con carácter escultórico en Latinoamérica

Los interesados en participar son invitados a presentar un resumen de 300 palabras y un CV/reseña curricular de no más de tres páginas al correo recastsymposiumgmail.com a más tardar el 15 de agosto de 2022. Los participantes aceptados serán notificados el 2 de Septiembre. Las propuestas pueden ser presentadas en idiomas inglés, español y francés.

Re·cast / Re·fundiciones: Presences and Processes in Latin American Sculpture se llevará a cabo de manera presencial en College Park, Maryland, e incluirá una mesa redonda con artistas de Latinoamérica y el Cariba representados en la colección del AMA, moderada por la directora del museo Adriana Ospina.
