The program "Art History in a Global Context" at the The Bibliotheca Hertziana – Max Planck Institute for Art History and the "Census of Antique Works of Art and Architecture Known in the Renaissance" at the Institut für Kunst– und Bildgeschichte, Humboldt–Universität zu Berlin, are pleased to announce a new fellowship in Rome and Berlin offered at either the predoctoral or postdoctoral level. These fellowships are intended for research and intellectual exchange on topics related to the reception of antiquity in the visual arts in the Early Modern era (ca. 1350–1800).

In the context of the fellowships, the topic of the reception of antiquity is broadly conceived, without geographical restriction. Proposals can optionally also include a digital humanities perspective which engages with the Census database (https://database.census.de).

The BHMPI and the Census will co–fund a research grant at either a six–month grant for students enrolled in a PhD program or a four-month grant for candidates already in possession of the PhD. Fellows can choose how to divide their time between Rome and Berlin, but they should plan to spend at least one week at the Hertziana and one week at the Institut für Kunst- und Bildgeschichte.

The fellowships are awarded in the amount of ca. 1500 EUR per month for six months at the predoctoral level, or 2500 EUR per month for four months at the postdoctoral level. The fellowship also includes a travel stipend.

Candidates can apply via the portal available on the Hertziana website. They should upload the requested PDF documents in English, German or Italian by June 30, 2022, with details of their proposed dates for the fellowship during the academic year 2022/23 (September 2022–July 2023).
