The global GDR. A Transcultural History of Art (Dresden, 9-11 Jun 22)

Dresden, Jun 9–11, 2022

Kerstin Schankweiler, TU Dresden

Die globale DDR – eine transkulturelle Kunstgeschichte (1949–1990) / The global GDR – A Transcultural History of Art (1949–1990)

EN This international conference is dedicated to a chapter of art history that has hardly been researched so far: the numerous linkages in the field of art between the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and the ‚socialist brother countries‘ beyond the Eastern Bloc in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Along three sections, international scholars and artists discuss the cultural-political framework of the exchanges, they present examples of socialist art production, and report on foreign architectural projects of the GDR as well as transnational contacts between artists. „The Global GDR“ thus offers a unique critical platform on which existing art historical and sociopolitical narratives are negotiated from a transcultural perspective.
