The Cleveland Museum of Art, 04.07.2022
Bewerbungsschluss: 15.04.2022

Taylor Malcmacher

The Cleveland Museum of Art is currently hiring for a Curator of Decorative Art and seeking a highly motivated, experienced curator to oversee the display, interpretation, and growth of the museum’s collection of European and American decorative arts.

Comprised of approximately 5,000 objects, the museum’s decorative art and design holdings are internationally known for their importance and artistic quality, with many works considered some of the finest of their type in the world. In European decorative art, particular strengths from the 16th and 17th centuries include Italian maiolica and German glass; French ceramics, including Saint-Porchaire and Palissy wares; Limoges enamels; and English silver. The museum’s holdings of 18th-century French decorative art are among the most important in the USA, with strengths in Rococo furniture, silver, and ceramics. Works by Peter Carl Fabergé are considered among the finest of their type in the world. The collection of American decorative art does not possess the same reputation as that of the European collection, but there are works of significance from the colonial area through the present. One of the strongest areas of the American collection consists of Aesthetic Movement furniture and glass. Louis Comfort Tiffany is well represented in the collection.

The museum is seeking candidates who are eager to lead a distinctive program of exhibitions and educational and public programs in alignment with the museum’s priorities. Key responsibilities will also include making new acquisitions; the interpretation and presentation of the permanent collection; research and publication of the collection; and donor cultivation. Candidates should be skilled at building effective relationships across departments and invested in collaboration and teamwork. The ideal candidate will be sensitive to the enhanced public role of museums today, will strive to communicate with scholarly and general audiences, and develop narratives that are relevant and inclusive to diverse audiences. The position is part of the Department of European Art from Classical Antiquity to 1800 and reports to the Chair of that Department.

A Master’s Degree in Art History or related field is required; a Ph.D. is preferred. Candidates should have at least five years of relevant museum experience, including experience organizing exhibitions and publishing scholarly research. A full range of benefits accompanies the position.

Applications, including a cover letter that addresses the candidate’s interest in the position and the relevance of their experience to the museum’s collection, a curriculum vita, writing sample, and the names and contact information for three references should be submitted by April 15, 2022.
