Section of Panels and Lectures on Visual Arts
at The Eighteenth World Congress of Jewish Studies

After being forced to manage our symposia solely online for so long, we eagerly look forward to meeting next summer in person in Jerusalem (though we are ready for more seemingly never-ending restrictions and remote communication).

Recently the field of Jewish visuality expanded significantly and now includes novel research rooted in such varied fields as social and economic history, anthropology, gender, race, memory and identity studies, museology, Holocaust studies and looted art provenances. We invite you to share your expertise with us and anticipate meaningful discussions over a broad spectrum of issues within the increasingly developing field of Jewish visual culture. We strongly encourage proposals for complete sessions (each including four lectures).

We welcome topics dealing with Jewish art and visual culture from Antiquity to our own days. The lectures and sessions may include, but are not limited to, explorations of:

- Jewish approaches to visuality;
- New perspectives on ancient Jewish art;
- Images of Jews, Jewish symbols, and Hebrew script in world art, photography, and cinema;
- Patronage, collections and collectors of Jewish art;
- Jewish art dealers;
- Jewish collections, looted art and provenance research;
- Curatorship and exposition of Jewish art;
- Jewish museums;
- Post-modern perceptions of Jewish art;
- Receptions of Jewish art;
- Jewish art as a historical source;
- Jewish artists, architects, and artisans;
- Women artists and Jewish identity;
- Art and the Holocaust;
- Jews, art and the concept of the Orient;
- Jewish identity in Israeli art;
- Preservation of Jewish artistic heritage.
