CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
Narrating Art and Feminism: Eastern Europe and Latin America

Online Research Seminar

“Narrating Art and Feminism: Eastern Europe and Latin America” is a new project launched with the support of the Getty Foundation as part of its Connecting Art Histories initiative. Young researchers from Eastern Europe and Latin America are encouraged to apply for this online research seminar that will run from October 2021 to November 2023.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project is a research seminar that will bring scholars from Eastern Europe and Latin America to work together on the subject of the intersection between art and feminism. Researchers from both regions face the hegemony of Western art historical discourse, but they mostly undertake attempts to undermine it separately. The seminar will provide a platform for the exchange of interregional and trans-regional perspectives on how to undermine the dominant narrative regarding art and feminism and how to envision the construction of an alternative global discourse. It is expected that the seminar will catalyze new research on global feminism and art. It will give a new impetus to studies of art and feminism by introducing a perspective that distances itself from the established conceptual framework and instead focuses on local traditions (the history of emancipation, cultural contacts, and historiographic traditions) and glocal contemporary politics.

This research seminar will consist of two parts. The first part will be a series of eleven meetings that will concentrate on such issues as the following: global and local projects on feminism and art (e.g., exhibitions, publications); theoretical tools used to build non-hierarchical art historical narratives; an analysis of concepts (e.g., feminism, emancipation, resistance, solidarity); local histories of women’s emancipation; the regional and trans-regional circulation of feminist ideas, artists, and artworks; and a comparative analysis of artworks from Eastern Europe and Latin America, considering their social, economic, and political contexts as well as how they relate to activism around such themes as women’s sexuality, reproductive rights, women’s labor, the violation of civil rights, LGBT+ politics, racism, ethnic minorities, and nationalist discourse. During the second part of the project, our activities will concentrate on preparing joint publications presenting results of the research conducted during the seminar. The publications will include archival material (e.g., artists’ writings, exhibition catalog entries, press discussions) and essays presenting proposals on how to narrate art and feminism globally.

This seminar will be co-led by Agata Jakubowska (Warsaw University, project director) and Andrea Giunta (University of Buenos Aires). Additionally, each seminar will host guest scholars/curators/artists from different countries as experts in their respective fields.

SEMINAR ORGANIZATION
October 2021–November 2023
All the meetings will be organized online (Zoom platform). The first two seminars will take place in October 2021. Later, they will take place once a month (most probably on Mondays), with the last meeting in November 2023. There will be no meetings during the summer holidays in Argentina and Poland (January/February, July/August). The seminars will last for four hours. Considering the time difference, the seminars will be organized in the mornings in Latin America (10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. GMT−3) and in the afternoons in Eastern Europe (2:00/3:00 p.m.–6:00/7:00 p.m. GMT+1/+2).

During the second part of the project, the preparation of publications, three meetings of working groups will be organized in the first half of 2023.

The participants will be expected to prepare for discussions based on materials delivered before the seminar and to conduct their research devoted to the seminar subject.

PARTICIPATION
The seminar will gather a group of approximately sixteen participants who are either PhD students or postdocs working in academic institutions in Eastern Europe or Latin America (up to five years after the completion of their PhD). It is also open to young people working at museums and art galleries if they are involved in research. The participants of previous Connecting Art Histories projects organized in Eastern Europe and Latin America are also invited to submit their proposals.

Each participant will receive a research bursary of 1,000 USD (for the whole project) to offset costs related to participation in the project, such as internet access, childcare, etc. The seminar language is English, and a good knowledge of English is necessary to participate.
