The field of art history is in the midst of a transformation. Over the decades, the geographical boundaries, visual and material objects, and theoretical frameworks that have structured the discipline have been critically re-examined and radically expanded. In the wake of postcolonial theory, the global turn, and the rise of visual culture studies, Eurocentric priorities have been subverted and the word “art” in art history has swelled to include craft, design, and electronic and digital media from disparate cultures and contexts. For scholars, these developments have been invigorating, opening new paths of inquiry and possibilities for transdisciplinary and transnational exchange. However, they must be matched by transformations in teaching if they are to have a truly meaningful effect on the future of the discipline.
The Open Art Histories Pedagogy Institute will bring together arts educators to examine pressing pedagogical issues within our discipline; share strategies for increasing accessibility and diversity in arts education; and workshop teaching practices, including assignments, in-class activities, and methods of delivery. We extend a special invitation to BIPOC and 2SLBGTQ participants.
In order to ensure an engaged audience and meaningful experience, registration will be limited to participants.

Call for Participation
We are seeking panel presenters, roundtable participants, poster and assignment contributors, and workshop facilitators. We invite proposals from instructors who teach art history, visual arts, media, studio practice, or cognate subjects, as well as museum educators, graduate students, and anyone else who uses visual and material culture in their teaching practice.

Panel Discussion: Globalizing the Survey
We invite proposals from participants wishing to present their challenges and successes in disrupting the Western art historical narrative to account for diverse forms of artistic expression and cultural pluralism in survey courses.

Round Table: Decolonizing the Arts Classroom
We seek participants who wish to discuss strategies for decolonizing the arts classroom.

Poster Session: Pedagogy and Practice
We invite proposals for poster presentations that focus on specific assignments, in-class activities, or methods of delivery that educators have used to foster inclusivity or accessibility, or to introduce open educational practices.

Assignment-Hack-A-Thon
Do you have an existing assignment you would like to make more accessible, inclusive, or active? We invite participants to bring an activity or assessment to a collaborative hack-a-thon for revamping and renewal.

Workshops
We invite proposals for 75-minute interactive workshops that address topics including, but not limited to, the following:
- Decolonizing and Indigenizing art history and visual arts syllabi
- Globalizing curricula and expanding intercultural competencies
- Leveraging Digital Humanities tools and Open Educational Resources to foster inclusion
- Using object-based and active learning to promote expanded ways of knowing
