Dear H-Artlist Members,
I'm a poet and translator who teaches at the University of
Rochester in New York and am looking for a way to track down a
very unusual painting I saw several years ago in one of the churches
on the Prague Castle compound (probably St. Vitus, but I'm not
absolutely certain). The painting looked to be proto-Renaissance,
possibly Italian, and is a particularly striking rendering of Christ
Ascension. The top of the painting shows the bottom half of Christ's
robe, some clouds, and his bare feet pointing downwards as he
ascends. Beneath the toes, in the bottom half of the painting, are
about a half a dozen of the apostles, all looking upward. If anyone
might be able to help me locate the name of the painter/date/title,
or an image of the painting, or any names of art historians I might
contact, I would be tremendously grateful. I have a poem about this
painting in my forthcoming book and my publisher would like to use
the image as the book cover.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Grotz
