This panel will initiate discussion of the theory and practice of cultural
appropriation, through consideration of the creation, promotion, expansion,
and critique of stereotypical views of cultural production formed through
trade and colonialism, whether acts of domination or emulation. The works of
Thorstein Veblen (who coined the term ³appropriation² in his 1899 book
Theory of the Leisure Class), Edward Said, Claude Levi-Strauss, Gayatri
Chakravorty Spivak, and Homi K. Bhaba are among those that might be
considered by panelists. The method by which cultural production was
appropriated, whether or not the appropriated elements were transformed, how
appropriated items were displayed and described and the economic structures
revealed in the process are all points of topical interest.
Interdisciplinary work is encouraged; papers may approach the topic from the
perspective of studio art, art history, anthropology, economics, museum
studies, philosophy, and religious studies, among other disciplines.
