"The Realm of the Senses: Synaesthetic Aspects of Perception"

We turn our attention at this conference to the opportunities for
intermodal experience that are brought about by various media. When
understood as an aesthetic phenomenon synaesthesia may be considered quite
simply in terms of the interpenetration of the senses. This approach
permits one to transcend the more typical approach to the senses that
examines each one in isolation and thus instead promotes an understanding
of the senses as in a continual state of exchange. Thus the individual
senses each are called into action in combination and in a procedural
fashion, a process that highlights the performative aspect of the
operations of the senses. The latter capacity is of fundamental importance
for an understanding of filmic perception and has not surprisingly been of
increasing interest to film scholars in recent years since, as film is
always a multi-sensory experience, it always brings about a multi-modal
perceptual experience. However beyond questions of filmic perception in
general, the topic of synaesthesia has long played a particular role in
film aesthetics. The interplay of colour and sound and the correspondence
between early cinema and visual music demarcate two realms in which these
issues were of key importance, but have only rarely been subject to
scholarly attention.
We thus seek to consider both the influence exerted both by the specific
space of the cinema and the social and perceptual conditions upon which the
mimetic properties of time-based images are contingent. Not only the
interior space of the cinema is relevant here; other institutional contexts
such as exhibition and installation spaces in galleries and museums are
equally pertinent. Each of these aesthetic realms produces particular
spatial and perceptual parameters – and thereby also define the particular
relationship that is brought about between the viewing space, the kinetic
image and the motor behaviour of the viewer him- or herself. The cinema and
the other time-based media described here may thus be considered a kind of
stage on which "metaphorical" synaesthesia is developed and trained.

Bei dieser internationalen Tagung wird die durch diverse Medien
ermoeglichte intermodale Erfahrung im Mittelpunkt des Interesses stehen.
Als aesthetisches Phaenomen verstanden, verweist die Synaesthesie einfach
gesagt auf eine Durchdringung der verschiedenen Sinne. Die sonst meistens
in einem Modell isolierter Wahrnehmung untersuchten Sinne geraten hierbei
in einen Austausch, wobei sich haeufig die Frage nach der Moeglichkeit
eines aktiven Erlernens jener Faehigkeiten stellt. Gerade dieser Punkt ist
fuer den Film von grundlegender Bedeutung und hat besonders in den letzten
Jahren fuer die Filmwissenschaft an Wichtigkeit gewonnen – da Film immer
multisensorisch ist, produziert er immer auch eine multimodale Wahrnehmung.
Ueber diese Frage der Wahrnehmung im Film hinaus, hat das Thema der
Synaesthesie jedoch auch im Hinblick auf die Filmgestaltung eine besondere
Rolle gespielt: insbesondere das Zusammenwirken von Farbe und Ton im Film
bzw. eine Beschaeftigung mit Korrespondenzen zum Lichtspiel und der Visual
Music zeugt von einer intensiven Auseinandersetzung, die viel zu selten
fokussiert wurde.
Der Tagung wird es deshalb einerseits um eine vielschichtige
Perspektivierung unterschiedlichster kultureller Ansaetze zu diesem Thema
gehen. Darueber hinaus wird aber insbesondere zu untersuchen sein, welchen
Einfluss der spezifische Raum und die besonderen Rahmenbedingungen der
Auffuehrung eines zeitbasierten Bildes auf die mimetischen Prozesse des
Films haben. Dies gilt heute nicht mehr nur fuer den Raum des Kinos,
sondern bezieht sich auch auf andere institutionelle Kontexte wie z.B.
Ausstellungsraeume, Galerien und Museen, in denen spezifische Bedingungen
das Verhaeltnis von Raum und kinetischem Bild bestimmen und dabei das
motorische Verhalten des Rezipienten in besonderer Weise steuern. Es gilt
dabei das Kino und die anderen Medien als besonderen Raum, als Schauplatz
zu erkennen, an dem eben diese sogenannte „metaphorische" Synaesthesie
ausgebildet wird.
