Reassessing Early Modern Milanese Art
Renaissance Society of America
Miami 2007

Recent archival research has uncovered information that demands a
reevaluation of Milanese art of the Early Modern period. These finds bring
to light mechanisms of patronage, workshop organization, the careers and
lives of local and foreign artist who worked there, and other issues that
have been neglected or misunderstood in Milanese studies. Moreover, new
approaches to art history in other areas, for example, those that examine
cross-cultural connections or material culture, are particularly relevant
to Early Modern Milan and have provided fruitful avenues for new research.
This session seeks papers that represent a broad range of approaches to
issues concerning the production and consumption of art and architecture
in Milan or elsewhere in Lombardy (or by Milanese or Lombard artists
elsewhere) from this period.
