Preservation

September 29, 30 and October 1, 2005

The so-called Gilded Age (c. 1850-1910) witnessed the rise of new forms
of housing, decoration, technological systems, manners, and domestic
activities. Salve Regina University's 9th Annual conference on Cultural
and Historic Preservation will focus on this material and cultural world
ranging from architecture and furnishings to social practices and gender
roles.

Paper topics will examine spaces within the home, such as the dining
room and the guest room, material culture, including furnishings,
decoration and quilts, interior and exterior natural scenery,
greenhouses, elevators, the rights of women during this period and the
influence of important events like the Spanish-American war on the
domestic interior. Walking tours of buildings on the Salve Regina
University campus and around Newport are also included within the
program.
