Dear members of H-ArtHist,
I am presently working on a project on portraiture at the Danish Museum of
National History at Frederiksborg Castle north of Copenhagen, Denmark. In
our collection there is a very peculiar portrait of the Danish King,
Christian II, attributed to the so-called Master of the Legend of St. Mary
Magdalen (Meister der Magdalenen-Legende). It shows the king half length, in
three-quarter-profile to the right, holding in his hands a miniature version
of his own portrait. Please visit the museum website in order to see the
painting:

Or:
www.frederiksborgmuseet.dk/
(then click "online katalog" and type "Christian 2." In the boks "Person på
maleri". The fifth painting listed (inv.no. A 4371) is the one referred to
here.)
My question goes:
There exists a replica of this painting, 35 x 27 cm, which was in the
collection of the Swiss businessman Walter E. Boveri. The Boveri collection
was sold after the death of Mrs. Boveri in 1990, and this is where I lose
track of it. Does anyone know where the painting might be today? Please let
me know!
Yours sincerely,
Mikael Bøgh Rasmussen, ph.d.
